1. Chris Keller on Spain, Albarino and Jelly Roll Syrah

Wine consultant Chris Keller is responsible for the wine lists at <a href="http://joesrestaurant.com" target="_blank">Joe’s Restaurant in Venice, and Bar Pintxo and Tar & Roses in Santa Monica. But he also makes his own wine near Santa Maria and sells that at the restaurants (and others) too. The wines he makes under his “emanuel tres” label are influenced by Catalonia and, as he puts it, have an accent on freshness. They include a Blanco (Grenache Blanc) and a Tinto (a young Tempranillo). And he also makes a Rosado or rosé, because, he says, “I want to have a wine to drink at the Hollywood Bowl!”

  5. Demystifying wine terms

I enjoy reading The New Yorker's Alex Ross on music. His words describe sounds so that I can hear them in my mind's ear: "It begins with rapid, swirling patterns, like snow in high wind," for example, or "a cascading theme that has an open-air, Alpine quality," or "The sound is somehow tall: ideas unwind in every register."

  7. Happy hour at Kapow! Noodle Bar

Here's the definition of "happy hour": a bar's answer to rush-hour traffic, when pencil-pushers and other slaves of the 9-to-5 can wait for clear streets while nursing cheap drinks and light food. That's the basis of Kapow's weekday specials. From 4 to 7 p.m., draft beers are half-off, as are house wines and well liquors. Pabst Blue Ribbon costs $2, and so does Sapporo. Off the small-plates menu, items that regularly cost less than $8 go down to $3 or $4, depending on the dish.

  15. Tour d'Ale: An insider's guide to the Howard County brewpub scene

Any foodie will tell you freshness matters. Same holds true for beer. When what’s in your glass was made on the premises, or by a nearby brewer on behalf of the establishment where you’re sipping your suds, it’s bound to taste better than it would if you were drinking a beer trucked in from Milwaukee or St. Louis.
