  3. Summer eating list

    I don't know if teachers still do this, but at the end of each school year, I was handed a summer reading list, a sheet of required and optional books that would prepare students for the coming school year. (I still owe a measure of revenge to the teacher who saddled me with "Lord Jim.")

  5. Eating strategically for health

    Restaurant Michael in Winnetka feels a bit like stepping back into the famed Le Francais dining room in Wheeling, except it's cozier, a touch more casual, with brighter lighting and upbeat jazz gently playing on the speakers. It all makes sense because chef Michael Lachowicz cut his culinary teeth at Le Francais and in Lyon, France, but he is also a dedicated Harley rider who started working in his grandfather's family restaurant in Chicago at a very young age. His love of French cooking, the kind that is hearty, full-bodied and artistically satisfying, saturates the menu with such items as confit cabbage, pommes Anna, salade Lyonnaise and pork galantine. Just back from some R and R and a successful marriage proposal in Florida, Lachowicz and I talked over a plate of pates in his newest addition to the restaurant, a charming side dining room, complete with a fireplace. This is an edited version of that conversation.

    After the coffee. Before searching for a deeper meaning. The Skinny: It's no secret that I'm a fan of "Nashville." However, I'm a little disappointed with where the writers are taking the Juliette Barnes character played by Hayden Panettiere. It feels...

  11. Chicago shops for the eco-conscious

    Let&rsquo;s face it: when it comes to going green, a lot of us are, well, a little green&mdash;especially with regards to shopping. Manufacturers say one thing, but oftentimes they do another. &ldquo;The abundance of green-washing is tragic,&rdquo; says Elsa Jacobson, regional director of the <a href=&quot;http://www.greenfestivals.org/chi">Chicago Green Festival</a>. &ldquo;Oftentimes, only part of the story is told with clever product descriptions.&rdquo;

    Spring has just begun, and yet we've already had more than a month of agreeable weekend-brunch weather. The mind-boggling warm weather we've been enjoying lately has me thinking that balmy Sunday afternoons will continue forever. Which is crazy, of course, but one can dream, right?
