5. Ten @ 10: Foods that are hard to get right

Most any slice of pizza is probably going to be edible. A greasy spoon burger is a greasy spoon burger is a greasy spoon burger. But what dish or drink must be perfectly executed to be palatable? That is, which are the least forgiving, where excellence is a must? Here are the 10 picks from the discerning, sometimes demanding Stew team.

  11. The proof is in the patty

Nearly three years ago, a food writer, a dining critic and a mostly vegetarian entertainment reporter piled into a Tribune-owned Chevrolet Malibu and hit the road to name Chicagoland's best veggie burger. The initial research was conducted by Tribune reporter <a href="http://bio.tribune.com/MonicaEng">Monica Eng, who sacrificially scarfed down more than a dozen before bringing Phil Vettel and this former pescatarian (don't judge) on board to hash out the final four: Grand Lux Cafe, The Counter and Ed Debevic's, all in Chicago, and Michael's Chicago Style Red Hots in Highland Park.

  21. Snoozers lose out

The Tenzing Norgay means you no harm. It is but a humble breakfast sandwich, at a humble price ($4.75), served by a humble Hyde Park sandwich shop on 57th Street named Z&H MarketCafe. The chorizo-egg torta at Rick Bayless' Xoco, no less modest, would like you to at least notice it; the bread is as squashed as the wheat holding the Tenzing Norgay, but notice those knuckles of house-made sausage, well-oiled by slices of avocado, mingling with a sharp splash of tomatillo.
