3. Hotel makeovers from around the world

As we approach the end of the year, we tend to think about making changes. Think you can't change? These hotels did. Many of them started as one thing and wound up another. They may inspire you to the point of prayer, drink (water or something harder), a life of crime or even going underground. Here are some that intrigued us. (Note that rates do not include applicable taxes.)

Last weekend I woke up facedown in a pool of pixie dust. Disney World's grand opening of New Fantasyland came with three days of facts, figures and flirtations about the future. It was informative and exhausting. But where else can quotes like these...

  15. Love for sale at L.A. animal shelters

As the year comes to a close, December 2012 may be the first time the Los Angeles municipal shelter system will be able to declare itself “no-kill.” Of course, the month isn’t quite over, but it looks like the Department of Animal Services will have euthanized no healthy or treatable animals in December. An editorial Sunday talks about the difficulty of staying no-kill when the Los Angeles shelters are taking in literally thousands of dogs and cats each month.

  17. A December to remember for Animal Services

December may turn out to be the first month that the shelter system run by the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services did not euthanize any treatable or healthy animals in its care. That is an extraordinary landmark in the world of animal welfare. Achieving "no-kill" status is the moral ambition of any animal shelter obligated to accept whatever is surrendered at its door or picked up off the streets. Although no-kill almost never means every animal taken in gets out alive — the hopelessly ill and dangerously aggressive are put down — it demonstrates genuine commitment in a nation where 3 million to 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters each year.

Glowing fish, giant dinosaurs, plasticized animals and more. That's not a description of the toy aisles at Target, or at least it's not only that. It also spotlights what's coming up in the new year at the area's family museums and zoos. Here are some of the events we are anticipating in 2013:
