  1. Counter Intelligence: Hostaria del Piccolo lives the fantasy — almost — in Venice

California rarely feels more like California than it does from a window seat at the new Hostaria del Piccolo in Venice, where life's great pageant rolls by. Graying tax attorneys cruise by on Rollerblades, women toss yoga mats into the back of their Porsches and handsome young families roll by on their bicycles as serenely as if they were ducks. As you regard the glass of wine in front of you, you may contemplate a Westside drinking game, doing shots of on-tap Merlot every time you spot a dude with interesting facial hair, a knit cap, tie-dye and a skateboard; hear a distant drum circle; or smell a clove cigarette.

Eleven-year-old Tyler Parker-Rollins says being vegan isn't always easy. But he says it's also "fun" and that he plans to be one "forever."
Eleven-year-old Tyler Parker-Rollins says being vegan isn't always easy. But he says it's also "fun" and that he plans to be one "forever." His 9-year-old brother, Will, loved it when his friends tried vegan pizza at his birthday party and "they...

  5. New Mirchi Wok and Mango Grove make a delicious combination

It seems most appropriate that on Valentine’s Day 2013, Mango Grove and Mirchi Wok will celebrate a year of peace and love between a pair of culinary “isms” -- vegetarianism and carnivorism. On this date in 2012, chef/owner Rohit Chawla and staff opened their doors to Indian food aficionados who previously had to choose one or the other “ism” if they wanted to dine on Chawla’s creative recipes. Although Mango Grove and Mirchi Wok were in the same building, they had separate dining rooms and separate kitchens.

  7. Holy Food!: Kosher and Its Imitators in Connecticut

What exactly is kosher? The short answer is a religious certification given to any cooked or processed food that an observant Jew is permitted to eat. A satisfying answer in detail is not easy, so a visual aid may help: picture three identical matzo balls, each floating in its own bowl of soup: one at Shuman's in Bloomfield, the second at Gold's in Westport, and the third at Michael's in Middletown. The first is kosher, the second is "kosher-style", and the third is just an unaffiliated bowl of matzo ball soup. In addition to these three states of existence, the matzo ball itself straddles yet another stratum of culinary holiness: kosher-for-Passover knoshing.

  9. Dawn Turner Trice: A visit to the herbalist to talk about the flu

Apparently your tongue speaks volumes about your health without you saying a word. And this is why Lisa Lau, a Chicago herbalist, recently had me saying "Ahhhh."

  11. Lovin' lentils

In the crowded world of legumes, we may ignore lentils in the rush to buy red kidney beans for chili, navy beans for ham-flavored soup, black beans, pinto beans, split peas and more.

  15. Heart-friendly strawberry treat

Being vegan doesn't mean you have to give up indulgences. Vegan baking does mean substituting for eggs and dairy ingredients, but it's easier than you may think.

  17. Counter Intelligence: A little taste of Cortez

What you think about Cortez is going to depend in large part on what you think about crowds, and noise, and screechy jazz, about well-meaning servers who are slightly impatient with the idea of service, and about spending most of an hour leaning up against a shoe box-narrow windowsill waiting for a seat to open up.

  19. Dining for the Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Getting a seat at Louisville's best restaurants on Kentucky Derby weekend can feel as impossible as a long shot's chances of taking home the roses. It's no secret that the city's culinary scene is among the hottest in the country. Recognition continues to pour in from national publications, the James Beard Foundation and food bloggers.

  21. LETTER: Objection to hunting

Am I the only one in South Dakota who objects to the recreational killing of dumb animals, including our state bird, for pleasure? I stop short of labeling hunters and fishers as cowards, as others have done, but it is something to think about. No, I am...

  23. Comfort food rocks at Toasted

With the opening of Toasted in Winter Park, Central Florida now has an eatery dedicated to the ooey-gooey marriage of cheese and bread
From the get-go it has a primal ooze that shifts the body into comfort-zone overdrive. At its essence are two ingredients: a carb crunch followed by a liquid blanket of calcium. And now the humble grilled-cheese sandwich is evolving from home-style to...
