  1. Dr. Charles Epstein dies at 77; geneticist survived attack by Unabomber

    Dr. Charles Epstein, a UC San Francisco medical geneticist who studied Down syndrome and pioneered genetic counseling for families with affected children, but whose career was temporarily interrupted by a vicious 1993 attack by the notorious Unabomber, died Feb. 15 at his home in Tiburon, Calif. He was 77 and had been battling pancreatic cancer.

    Mickey was born in Illinois with Down Syndrome and 3 holes in her heart. Around 9 months of age, it was determined that surgery needed to be done soon. Mickey's parents had to move their family of 3 back to Indiana where they grew up so she could have heart surgery at Riley. On March 31, 1998, Micky had open heart surgery to repair the 3 holes. The largest hole was almost the size of a dime. She recovered wonderfully and began to grow and thrive after surgery.
