    The Daily Mirror

  5. 'Valhalla Rising' is itching for a fight

    Brand X
One of my least pleasant childhood movie memories is of seeing Richard Fleischer's 1958 “The Vikings” on the big screen. The sight of an eagle clawing out Kirk Douglas's left eye was a bit much for my tender 8-year-old sensibilities. (Did it actu...

  9. Donald Richie dies at 88; interpreted Japan for the West

Donald Richie, an American expatriate in Japan who became that country's preeminent Western interpreter, explaining its culture — from cinema to Zen to tattoos — in books and essays that illuminated the author's psyche as much as that of his adopted home, has died. He was 88.

  11. Gems from the '50s: Kenneth Turan's DVD picks of the week

As far as decades go, the 1950s are sometimes characterized as a boring time when nothing of significance really happened. But you wouldn’t know it by these two exemplary films with new DVD releases to boast about.

  13. 75 achievements Oscar forgot

    Tribune movie critic
When the Oscar nominations come out Tuesday, there are bound to be cries of injustice -- and in many cases, those charges will have merit. Can anyone really defend the exclusion from the Oscar nominee list in various years of movies such as "Some Like...

  15. DVD review: Kurosawa classic 'Rashomon' brushed up for Blu-ray

It's not just that Akira Kurosawa's 1950 “Rashomon” brought Japanese film to the west; or that it introduced to us the young, rising Toshiro Mifune; or that its title has become the universal shorthand for the uncertainty of the truth, as seen through different eyes. It's also that it's a great movie that suggests new possibilities each time you watch it. Ergo, it's a film that is more worthy to own on disc than most movies, which are only good for a few viewings. I return to it every few years; even with simply one set of eyes, I've managed to see it in many different ways, sometimes incompatible with each other.

  17. DVD review: 'Samurai Trilogy' is a cut above predecessor

In 1954, Japan's Toho studio made three films that achieved enduring international success. The first was Akira Kurosawa's “Seven Samurai,” which shows up within the top 10 of nearly every international critics' poll. The second was “Gojira,” later to be known as “Godzilla,” very likely the best known Japanese film of all time. And the third won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, despite which you're unlikely to have heard of it, unless you're a samurai film buff.
