  1. Russell Crowe May 'Play' in Pitt's Place

    Zap2It.com
Russell Crowe is in final negotiations to replace Brad Pitt in Universal's "State of Play." Should Crowe sign on for the project, as The Hollywood Reporter is saying, it would save the adaptation of the British miniseries from a demise that seemed...

  3. 'Michael Clayton'

After what must seem like a lifetime of writing screenplays for other people to direct, Tony Gilroy has come out from behind the curtain. With the George Clooney-starring "Michael Clayton," he's not only saved his best script for himself, he's also turned out a smart and suspenseful legal thriller that comes completely alive on-screen.

  7. DVD Review: 'The Bourne Ultimatum'

Directed by Doug Liman, "The Bourne Identity" was a spiffy little summer action movie, carried by brisk car stunts and a confident performance by Matt Damon. Paul Greengrass took over "The Bourne Supremacy" and ratcheted up the tension to stomach-churning levels, while never sacrificing Jason Bourne's increasingly tortured soul. With Greengrass back at the helm, could "The Bourne Ultimatum" wrap the franchise up in a tidy bow?

  9. The Oscars: A dark view on dark times

IT used to be that violence, even more than comedy, was the kiss of death for Oscar movies. Then came blood-saturated films like "Crash" and "The Departed," which overturned some of those rules.

  13. Engaging 'Bourne Ultimatum' sets a frantic pace

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

  15. Directors step up to take their shot at Oscar

THE six nominees for this year's best director Academy Award have made a total of 23 feature films. To put that meager number into perspective, consider this: "The Departed," which finally won Martin Scorsese his directing Oscar last year (on his sixth nomination), was his 21st theatrically released feature. As with the acting categories, the best director Oscar often goes to overdue candidates -- which is to say, it's awarded for bodies of work as much as for the film under consideration -- but this year, instead of the usual lineup of establishment old-timers, voters are picking from a pool of career mavericks and comparative neophytes.

  19. Real estate broker Steve Samuels knows development

EVERYBODY is a producer these days. Just ask Steve Samuels, a successful real estate developer who just parachuted into the movie business as the producer of two of the fall season's most gripping dramas, Tony Gilroy's "Michael Clayton" and Paul Haggis' "In the Valley of Elah." Amazingly, "Clayton" was sitting at Warner Bros., going nowhere until Samuels agreed to help finance the picture. Samuels knows he still has a lot to learn about the film business but insists he didn't become a producer to meet movie stars. "I'm not driven by the sex appeal of the business," he says. "It only clouds your judgment."
