3. Topsy-turvy romance 'Upside Down' turns out to be a bit flat ★★

All you need is love, according to "Upside Down," to save your planet from the dystopian doldrums. Nice sentiment: Fritz Lang's "Metropolis," among others, got there first.

  9. Review: 'Upside Down' leaps with love, imagery

It's best not to overthink the sci-fi love story "Upside Down" and just enjoy its dazzling visuals, dream-like inventiveness and lush romanticism.

  15. Film review: Biopic has more than one hitch

Alfred Hitchcock's reputation as a filmmaker was already on the rise when he died 32 years ago. Since then it has consistently (and rightly) grown ever greater. At the same time, his reputation as a person has taken a lot of blows ... whether rightly or not is a determination way above my pay grade. It's significant that Donald Spoto's biography — the first Hitchcock bio to be published after his death — was subtitled “The Dark Side of Genius.”

TELLURIDE, Colo. -- The new film “Ginger and Rosa” by English filmmaker Sally Potter screened Friday night at the Telluride Film Festival high in the mountains of Colorado. With stirring performances by relative veteran Elle Fanning and newcomer Alice Englert, the film is on the fall festival circuit in search of U.S. distribution.
