1. Review: Steven Spielberg's 'Lincoln' A Towering Achievement

Hollywood's most successful director turns on a dime and delivers his most restrained, interior film. A celebrated playwright shines an illuminating light on no more than a sliver of a great man's life. A brilliant actor surpasses even himself and makes us see a celebrated figure in ways we hadn't anticipated. This is the power and the surprise of <a id="ENMV0002731" class="taxInlineTagLink" title="Lincoln (movie, 2012)" href="../topic/entertainment/movies/lincoln-%28movie-2012%29-ENMV0002731.topic">"Lincoln."

  3. Sundance 2013: Icy abstraction of D.C. snipers in 'Blue Caprice'

It seemed like a nightmare become real -- a string of random shootings in the Washington, D.C., area in October 2002 that gripped the nation with fear and confusion. That the perpetrators, once captured, turned out to be a former soldier and a teenage boy only made the spree more surreal, more troubling.

  5. Film review: This Abe is hard to top

The trailers and TV ads for "Lincoln" — with their wall-to-wall music, stately proclamations and reverent tone — suggest an unrestrained Steven Spielberg, fully indulging his worst tendencies. They won't win any truth-in-advertising awards either — a good thing, since what we get is far better than they lead you to expect.

  7. 'Lincoln': A political animal of a different kind ★★★★

"Lincoln" is a grave and surprisingly subtle magic trick, conjuring the past and an almost ridiculously impressive figure in ways that transcend art direction and the right stovepipe hat. Director Steven Spielberg's latest combines the most commonly shared notions we have of our 16th U.S. president — the folksy deliberation, the spindly gait, the all-seeing eye on the prize of history remade — with the behavior, idiosyncrasies and contradictions of an actual human being. It blends cinematic Americana with something grubbier and more interesting than Americana, and it does not look, act or behave like the usual perception of a Spielberg epic. It is smaller and quieter than that.

I remember thinking I would hate American History X. It had gotten a bad review from a critic I respected. I saw it and was pleasantly surprised.

  17. Big surprise: Whale tale 'Big Miracle' is a winner -- 3 stars

The success of last year's "Dolphin Tale"proved this theorem: Imperiled marine animals plus true-ish story plus workmanlike sincerity plus happy ending equals a hit. Will the equation hold for director Ken Kwapis' whale movie"Big Miracle"?
