9. Improv comedy at New Britain's Hole in the Wall Theater pokes fun at disaster films

For two nights, New Britain's Hole in the Wall Theater hosts this improvisational comedy show based on the disaster films of the 1970s. Even if you don't know them by heart — classic films like "The Towering Inferno," "The Poseidon Adventure," "Airport," "Earthquake," etc. — chances are you've internalized the dramatic twists and turns. It's stuff that's ripe for comedy (think "Airplane"); veteran improvisers (pictured) from Seattle, New York and, of course, Connecticut, take suggestions from the audience for scenes, settings, props and the like for some on-the-spot imaginative skits. (Oh, and if you love those old special effects, there'll be an improvised light show as well.)

  11. Reefer Madness at Hole in the Wall Theater in New Britain

The Demon Weed. It's at the center of Reefer Madness, a musical satire based on the 1936 anti-weed propaganda flick that found a second life as a comedy, in which Mary Lane (played by Stephanie Layne, pictured) gets hooked up by Ralph (Matthew Benjamin Horowitz, also pictured) and goes kinda nuts. Wholesome teenager Jimmy Harper (played by Kevin Clark) has his own fall from grace, and it's all set to lyrics by Kevin Murphy and music by Dan Studney. Truly maddening, indeed.

  17. Frenemies: Yasmina Reza's 'Life X 3' playing at New Britain's Hole in the Wall Theater

In Yasmina Reza's Life X 3, two couples act out three different interpretations of the dinner from hell, as Hubert and wife Inez show up early (by a full day) to the home of Henry and Sonia. It gets worse, much worse: there's nothing to eat, although lots of wine gets imbibed. Not a good combination.
