1. 'Artist,' Scorsese's 'Hugo' shine brightest in 2012 Oscar nominations

    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer

  5. Oscar Nominations for 2012

All my friends think I wake up early for the Oscar nominations. It’s baffling how little they know me. I love nothing more in life than sleeping in. And why wake up early to pull an Elvis and shoot the TV screen at the idiotic nominations that always end up irking me?

  7. City Lights: The Oscar pool is on

Everyone has at least one skill that doesn't have a practical use. Mine is the ability to name every movie ever to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. I absorbed that knowledge from years of reading critical studies of the Oscars, to the point...

Last year when I wasn’t a party of the San Diego Film Critics Society, I cringed when I saw how many awards they gave to 44 Inch Chest, a movie with a great cast, but lame screenplay.

  15. Top films of 2011 go back in time, and many find success

The very best movies of the past year went back to the earliest years of cinema for their subject matter, but 100 or so years amount to just a few film frames when you consider that some of the other movies in this 10-best list went back to the dawn of time for their stories.

None. Not, as some predicted, for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Max Von Sydow) or Best Supporting Actress (Sandra Bullock). Well done, Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
