3. A Raisin in the Sun Playing at Westport Country Playhouse

A Raisin in the Sun tells the story of a family's struggle to retain dignity in a harsh and changing world on Chicago's South Side in the 1950s. It's based on playwright Lorraine Hansberry's own battles against racial segregation, it's name taken from the poem Harlem by Langston Hughes in which he asks the question: "What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?" The show opens Tuesday at Westport Country Playhouse, directed by Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad, best known for her role as Clair Huxtable on "The Cosby Show" — but she won her Tony thanks to her leading role in a Broadway revival of, you guessed it, A Raisin in the Sun.
