  3. New releases: 'To the Wonder' a beautiful and rewarding film

    To the Wonder
    To the Wonder Available on VOD beginning April 12 Early buzz on Terence Malick's film pegged it as a muddled rehash of the director's crazily ambitious "The Tree of Life," but that's not entirely accurate. Some of Malick's trademarks have become...

  5. 'Hyde Park on Hudson'

    Rather than merely doing an impersonation, Bill Murray makes a surprisingly credible Franklin Delano Roosevelt in director Roger Michell's ("Notting Hill") portrait of the president during a weekend visit from British royalty (Samuel West, Olivia Colman)...

  7. Bill Murray scoffs at doubt as FDR in 'Hyde Park on Hudson'

    For Bill Murray, playing Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the new film “Hyde Park on Hudson” meant risking some serious derision. Now 62, Murray carries with him a huge recognition factor thanks to a host of comedies: "Stripes," "Caddyshack," "Groundhog Day," "Ghostbusters." More recently he has brought a weary, witty gravitas to more bittersweet material, a la "Rushmore," "Lost in Translation" and others.

  9. 'Hyde Park on Hudson' review: Makes 'Lincoln' look like 'Skyfall'

    <strong>*1/2 (out of four)</strong>
    *1/2 (out of four) President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Bill Murray) drives his fifth cousin Daisy (Laura Linney) to an isolated field. He puts her hand on his thigh and unfastens his pants. You know where this is going. Daisy must be awfully good with...

  11. Murray is the anchor, but plot adrift in 'Hyde Park on Hudson' ★★

    The music&rsquo;s the best thing about the peculiar, demurely prurient &ldquo;Hyde Park on Hudson,&rdquo; starring Bill Murray as Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Laura Linney as his spinster fifth cousin, Daisy Suckley. Setting the scene, and the mood, for this anecdotal account of FDR&rsquo;s pre-war sexual escapades one weekend in 1939, composer Jeremy Sams soaks the movie in a sly and charming recurring theme, a <span class=&quot;italic" style="text-align: justify; font-style: italic; font-weight: normal;">habanera </span>rather like a buttoned-down variation on the famous aria from Bizet&rsquo;s &ldquo;Carmen.&rdquo;

  13. Bill Murray's take on FDR in 'Hyde Park on Hudson'

    TELLURIDE, Colo. — Actors are used to pressure, but the task before Bill Murray in "Hyde Park on Hudson" was more than a little stressful. Director Roger Michell said that if the "Ghostbusters" and "Groundhog Day" veteran didn't want to star as...

  15. Review: Bill Murray shines as FDR in 'Hyde Park on Hudson'

    Los Angeles Times Film Critic
    When Ronald Reagan was asked, as he periodically was, whether his experience as an actor had helped him to be an effective president, he'd genially respond that he didn't know how anybody could do the job without having been an actor. He was, Reagan...

  23. Out on Home Video: 'Skyline' released this week

    <span style=&quot;font-family: Arial,sans-serif;">SKYLINE</span><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif;"> (2010/B-/</span><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif;">Directed by Colin and Greg Strause/</span><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif;">Starring Eric Balfour, Donald Faison, Scottie Thompson, Brittany Daniel, David Zayas, Crystal Reed, Robin Gammell, J. Paul Boehmer, Tanya Newbould, Tony Black, Pam Levin/</span><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif;">Universal/Rated PG-13/Sci-Fi/94 minutes/</span><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif;">Available on: DVD and Blu-ray):</span><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif;"> "Skyline" presents viewers with a vision of hard-working, yet self-indulgent adults who remain unmarried and childless into their late 20s and early 30s. Elaine (Scottie Thompson) and Jarrod (Eric Balfour), are a smitten young couple traveling to Los Angeles for friend Terry's (Donald Faison) birthday celebration. After a night spent drinking with Terry, his girlfriend Candice (Brittany Daniel) and secretary Denise (Crystal Reed), the revelers awaken in Terry's posh high-rise apartment to an eerie blue light from outside. Looking into the light hypnotizes the viewer who is subsequently vacuumed into its source. The Strause Brother's aliens are spiny, shape-shifting space ships, flying seekers, giant crushers, and tentacled beasts that hunt down those humans surviving the initial onslaught. Up and down, in and out of the high-rise the survivors go, joining other survivors, or succumbing to the invaders. The film illustrates a bleak vision that coincides with predictions of extraterrestrial visitors presented by preeminent scientist, Stephen Hawking. Comparisons to "Star Trek's" alien Borg or to the plot line of "War of the Worlds," may be inevitable, though this vision is reasonably fresh. "Skyline's" flaw lies in its disposable humans, as the characters assume a low priority in the minds of the Strauses who own the special effects company that made such a movie possible on a mere $10 million dollar budget. DVD features: Commentary with Directors Greg and Colin Strause or Commentary with Co-writer/Producer Liam O'Donnell and Co-writer Joshua Cordes, deleted and extended scenes, alternate scenes, Pre-Visualization, English, French or Spanish language tracks, widescreen. Blu-ray features same plus: D-Box Enabled.</span>
