17. A Tribute to Woody Guthrie at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown on Oct. 26

Woody Guthrie (pictured) was America's foremost Dust Bowl troubadour. He would have turned 100 this year. Guthrie's place in popular culture is secure; idolized by a young Bob Dylan, Guthrie sired a psychedelic-era successor in son Arlo (of Alice's Restaurant fame) and was revived a few years ago by Billy Bragg and Wilco, who began setting Woody's unused poems to new music. Now Thomas Jones, a Canadian musician, actor, mime, puppeter, improv artist and clown, performs as Guthrie in Woody Sed, an original 90-minute stage work playing for two nights at Middletown's Buttonwood Tree. Jones traces the arcs of Guthrie's life and music during the Great Depression.

  23. Counter Intelligence: Red Hill brings a folky modernism to Echo Park

To understand Red Hill, Jason Michaud and Trevor Rocco's newish place in a converted Chinese bakery just north of Sunset, you could do worse than to look at the bread-and-butter plate, a once-free nicety that has evolved into an item of competition in L.A.'s new surge of small-plates restaurants.
