  9. Review: 'House of Earth' by Woody Guthrie

Nora Guthrie had put off reading her late father Woody Guthrie's recently unearthed novel, "House of Earth," even after she'd agreed for it to be published. Having devoted much of 2012 to preparing events and projects surrounding the centennial of the singer-songwriter-artist's birth, she said, she wanted to read the book at her leisure, when it wouldn't feel like "work."

  11. Freakwater spotlights mood and melody at the Hideout

Songs about broken vows, impoverished families and impending death aren't supposed to be pretty. Just don't tell Freakwater. Monday at a sold-out Hideout, the locally based band upended convention, filling tales of loss and hardship with gorgeous harmonies and homespun warmth. The alt-country group furthered its nontraditional approach by viewing bleak scenarios as opportunities for subtle humor. Indeed, having spent approximately half of the 90-minute show sharing amusing stories and cracking jokes, Freakwater mainstays Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Irwin might consider appearing on Chicago's famed comedy circuit.

  13. Freakwater back with a melodic bang, no whimper

Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Irwin have been singing together for most of their two-decade friendship, which is inextricably intertwined with their musical partnership as country-crooning duo Freakwater. Local label Thrill Jockey recently reissued Freakwater's classic "Feels Like the Third Time" to mark the 20th anniversary of the release, so Bean and Irwin decided to hit the road for the first time in a half-dozen years.
