1. Why Roth Says He'll Never Marry

David Lee Roth has laughed off the suggestion that he’s in a gay relationship, and explained why he’ll never get married. And the singer says he’s glad he split with Van Halen during the 1980s – because it made him a more interesting person. Roth tells Buzzfeed.com: “I’ve lived alone my whole adult life. I’ve had girlfriends. I’ve had love affairs. Never longer than a year and a half. “I’m the drunk who won the lottery – I’m going to be very difficult to convince of a lot of traditional things. I put off getting married when I found out: oh, you don’t really have to! There’s a lot of us out there.” He returned to Van Halen in 2006 after leading a solo career, and was at the helm for last year’s album A Different Kind Of Truth. “I wonder who I might have been had I stayed in the band,” he reflects. “Not as interesting, not as involved. “I probably would have followed the more traditional, long, slow climb to the middle. Enjoying my accomplishments, living off my residuals. I wouldn’t have half the stories to tell.” Having said that, he still thinks of the band’s first glory days. “We lived our lives like roughnecks,” he recalls. “Roustabouts, circus carnies. I wonder if it’s still a dream to live the way we lived. I know the success part of it is. Not just the partying, but the travel, the late nights – not just with groupies, but with all kinds of colleagues in a variety of other pursuits."

  3. VH Reunion Talk Flatters Former Bassist

Former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony says he’s “flattered” that frontman David Lee Roth wants him back in the band. An original lineup reunion remains unlikely as Eddie Van Halen continues to move forward with his son Wolfgang playing bass. But Roth recently said he’d love to see Anthony back in the fold – not least because his voice adds a great deal to the band’s sound. Now Anthony tells Blabbermouth: “It was flattering to hear Dave talk like that. He never used to talk like that when we were all playing together! “But hey – I really don’t know what to say to that. It was flattering that he said that. And, obviously, I’m the kind of guy that… water under the bridge. I don’t hold any kind of grudges for anything, and you never know what will happen at any time.” The bassist fell foul of the guitarist’s temper in the mid-2000s and was replaced by Wolfgang for the reunion with Roth. It’s thought the disagreement stemmed from Anthony remaining in touch with ex singer Sammy Hagar, with whom he later formed Chickenfoot. He says: “At this point in your life and career and whatever, it’s more about the friendship, and just people. And if the music side of it happens, if that comes about, all the better – but that’s not what it’s really about at this point.”

  7. Van Halen-Slash Clash Lands Couple In Jail

An unidentified couple was arrested in Cleveland recently after a heated argument over whether Eddie Van Halen or Slash was the better guitar player got completely out of hand. According to Cleveland.com, the passionate pair was staying at a local Motel 6 when both began to argue about which musician was best, with the man backing the former Guns N’ Roses guitarist, while the woman argued (loudly) that the Van Halen axeman was tops. Cops were called in when the fight got too hot, and a routine database check revealed both six-string supporters had outstanding warrants and so they were arrested.

  9. Roth Stumped By Stalled State of Van Halen

In a recent Q&A with Rolling Stone, Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth took the time to express his angst about the lack of activity in and around the band’s camp, which has been in hibernation for some time now. Roth said in regards to writing new songs, “I’m not sure what’s in Ed’s [Van Halen] mind at this point. Truth be told, Edward and I haven’t written a new song in 20 years.” Addressing the lack of movement on securing any new tour dates, he said, “There’s nothing on the ticket as far as [touring past this summer], and that’s a disappointment, frankly. We have an audience and we have a potential future in many, many places, but our story is one of a whole lotta Shakespeare going on.”

  13. VH Security Director Spills Beans On Band

Ed Anderson was director of security and David Lee Roth’s bodyguard from 1980-1984. ”Big Ed” contributed to the hardcover photo book, Van Halen, by Neil Zlozower. VHND.com has the exclusive on what he had to say about his amazing job: “Ah, what these eyes have seen! I was there, brother, for the insane ’round-the-world ride that was 1980 through 1984. Van Halen were kings- no, GODS. We were Van Halen. We could do no wrong. The crazier we got, the more you loved us, and the more you loved us, the bigger we got. Nobody could improve on what we’d perfected. The Stones may have been a rock ’n’ roll circus but we were a rock ’n’ roll zoo. “I was director of security. My job description was simply one line: Protect the band. But taking care of David (I was his designated babysitter), Edward, Alex, and Michael was not always such a simple thing to do. I had to keep them safe when they were playing live. How did I know that the lunatic jumping on stage only wanted to sing along with Dave? I had to keep them out of harm’s way when they were back at the hotel, when they were partying, when they were traveling. Berserk fans. Jealous boyfriends. Sold-out shows. Drinking. Drugs. Women. I had to protect them from each other and from themselves. See the full article here.
