  3. Sept. 6-11 in nightlife: Virgin Mobile FreeFest, The National, Incubus, new Heavy Seas seasonal

Virgin Mobile FreeFest is finally here. And unlike last year, when only High Zero conflicted with the festival, there are a ton of other things happening on Saturday. We'll have a blog post later this week on alternatives to Virgin FreeFest for Saturday. Below is what's happening elsewhere this week: besides FreeFest, Merriweather has a couple of other solid shows; so does the Ottobar; Heavy Seas will release a new seasonal beer this week; the Wham City Comedy night returns; and Metro Gallery hosts a concert photography exhibit that will feature a performance by Secret Mountains.

  5. Like/dislike: Mates of State

Since the late '90s, Mates of State have been a staple of the indie rock world. The husband-and-wife duo consists of Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner, who combine keyboard, drums and vocals to create energetic harmonies. Over the past 14 years, the Lawrence, Kan. natives have released seven albums and played with bands such as Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab for Cutie. On Tuesday their travels will take them to The <a href=&quot;http://findlocal.baltimoresun.com/remington/bars-and-clubs/bars-clubs/the-ottobar-baltimore-club">Ottobar</a>, where they will perform songs from their most recent album "Mountaintops." Here Kori gives us her take on high-waisted pants (a no-go), the Beiber movie (she cried) and more.

  9. Hip-Hop Loving Hipsters celebrate one-year anniversary, premiere exclusive Pop & Hiss mix

    Pop & Hiss
The rap on "hipsters" is that they don't like rap. Ostensibly, they're zeitgeist carpetbaggers hopping onto whatever is the hot trend du jour. When Pitchfork and the Fader told them to worship Lil Wayne, Clipse, and Cam'ron, they did, only......
