  1. Q&A: 'Evil Dead' star Jane Levy

When Jane Levy told family and friends she'd star (and have a demon inhabit her) in the “Evil Dead” remake, she didn’t emphasize that she’d spend the shoot freezing in just her underwear, vomiting blood on people.

  3. Toss up a bottle for the author of 'Cocktail'

Before it became a lucrative if critically drubbed exemplar of '80s cinematic cheese, the Tom Cruise vehicle "Cocktail" first sprang to life as a novel by Heywood Gould, who based the book on his experiences bartending throughout New York in the 1970s.

  5. SXSW 2013: For Amanda Palmer, it takes a village

AUSTIN, Texas -- Amanda Palmer concluded her panel Wednesday at the South by Southwest Music Conference by pulling out a ukulele, bashing out a few chords and rhyming "banish evil" with "save the people."

  7. SXSW 2013: Hawtin, Deadmau5 see cracks in EDM's rise

AUSTIN, Texas -- Richie Hawtin and Joel Thomas Zimmerman, better known by his stage name Deadmau5, allowed a packed hall to eavesdrop on their conversation Tuesday at the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference. They geeked out about gear, cracked jokes, and alternately gushed about and lamented the evolution of electronic dance music. As a sort of "State of the EDM movement" summit, it was tough to top -- a fascinating glimpse into the minds of two self-described "tech nerds" who helped bring machine-driven music out of basements and underground clubs into arenas.

  9. Fake Shore Drive: A tastemaker of Chicago rap

Andrew Barber deals almost exclusively with young men who have come into money. Some are newly rich; some started poor and worked their way to comfortable; and others, arguably his bread and butter, are not wealthy yet but stand to make a chunk of change. Some, he finds, and some come to him.

  11. SXSW Day 3: Indians, Telekinesis, Angel Haze

AUSTIN, Texas -- During a short but ravishing set by Indians -- the band/project helmed by Danish singer and multi-instrumentalist Soren Lokke Juul -- the question had to be asked: Is it the setting or the artist? I've seen so many powerful...

AUSTIN, Texas -- Savages, a U.K. quartet that made new converts with each gig at the South by Southwest Music Conference, was in a particularly nasty mood during its final appearance Saturday.

  15. SXSW Day 4: Rhye, MO, Mikal Cronin, Parquet Courts

AUSTIN, Texas -- Can't think of anything better than a cappella gospel music in the morning, especially when it's sung with the grit and flair of the Relatives. On Friday at the South by Southwest Music Conference, it was a rollercoaster ride across...

  19. 'Bitter Buddha': Spotlight's a bit brighter on pair's return

The last time I spoke with comedian Eddie Pepitone was June, just prior to the world premiere of his movie <a href=&quot;http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-06-14/entertainment/ct-mov-0615-chicago-closeup-20120615_1_bitter-buddha-lincoln-lodge-comedian">"The Bitter Buddha" in Chicago</a>, where it screened during the Just For Laughs festival. Nine months and several tour stops later, he and director Steven Feinartz (a Buffalo Grove native) return to town this weekend on a triumphant wave of social media fervor. Both will be at the Music Box Theatre on Friday, with Pepitone performing a set Saturday at the Lincoln Lodge.

  21. SXSW 2013 keynote: Dave Grohl and the importance of 'voice'

AUSTIN, Texas -- Dave Grohl, looking more professorial than usual (it must have been the dark-rimmed glasses he donned for the occasion), might have a future scripting reality shows if this music thing doesn't work out.

  23. SXSW 2013: Clive Davis and how the talent scout who knew 'nothing' got famous

AUSTIN, Texas -- Clive Davis is always selling something, it seems. At the South by Southwest Music Conference on Thursday, it was his autobiography that was being flogged, and as he sat to talk about it with Billboard journalist Bill Werde, he...
