3. Holocaust Museum's message: Don't bully

The little girl is only 8, and so she does not yet read newspapers or watch or listen to the local news. But she knew of the death of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton — some of the older kids she knows had been talking about it. So last Sunday, some hours before the Super Bowl, she said, "Bullies should not ever have guns," and that was the reason that she and I drove to the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center in Skokie.

  7. God is no Yeti: a rumination on religion

Several times, reading the comments beneath an online article about religion, I've come upon remarks along the lines of: "Really? A magic being in the sky?" Terry Eagleton, in "Reason, Faith, and Revolution," refers to this pseudo-critique as the Yeti theory of belief in God: The idea that what the religious believe in is some sort of entity in the world for whose existence we have dubious evidence at best. In a review of Richard Dawkins' "The God Delusion," Eagleton puts it this way:

  11. Ambassadors, a rock band from Brooklyn, find big audience in Hampton Roads

Over the years, many Hampton Roads radio stations have been content to follow more often than lead. For example, once rock hits were broken in major markets, local outlets would jump on and ride the wave.

  13. Threatened by faith in Santa Monica

Christmas in Santa Monica has gotten a whole lot darker and a whole lot less tolerant. For almost 60 years Santa Monica's Palisades Park embodied the Christmas spirit with its displays depicting the birth of Jesus. Through the use of large dioramas, the Christmas story unfolded chronologically, based on the Gospels of Luke and Matthew.

  15. LIFE MATTERS: Heaven for real, I believe

Thousands of people have related their stories of near-death experiences, perhaps the most popular in recent years being told by a pastor, Don Piper, “90 Minutes in Heaven,” 2004, and by a child, Colton Burpo, “Heaven is for Real,” 2010, neither of which, though fascinating in their own right, is likely — given the occupation of the first and the age of the second — to convince those skeptical of such experiences.
