Lady Gaga Launches 'Born This Way' Foundation
!["Born This Way" is no longer just Lady Gaga's Grammy-nominated album; it's now also the name of her new foundation, as well. The pop icon announced on Thursday that she will launch her Born This Way Foundation (BTWF) at a kickoff event at Harvard University on February 29th. The foundation will "explore the best ways to reach youth and create a new culture of kindness, bravery, acceptance and empowerment," according to a press release, working in concert with the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a number of other organizations. Gaga has long been an advocate of tolerance and has pushed an anti-bullying message through a number of platforms; she spoke out and called for bullying to be made illegal after the suicide of a gay student in September, and sent a moving video message to a teen on an anti-bullying campaign in November. In December, she even spoke with President Obama, sharing her experience and ideas on how to eradicate intolerance amongst the youth of America. "BTWF, a non-profit charitable organization, will address issues like self-confidence, well-being, anti-bullying, mentoring and career development and advocacy," the release said. But, she’s not the only one flashing the symbol around in the media. Stars like Janet Jackson, Usher, Lady Gaga and Taylor’s good friend Katy Perry have all been photographed doing the “heart-hand” move. Taylor explains to the <em>New York Times </em>that the symbol is <em>“something between ‘I love you’ and ‘Thank you.’” </em>She says she started doing “heart hands” in pictures and out car windows back in high school. Now she uses it to express her love for her fans. <em>“It’s not like meeting a stranger, it’s sort of like saying hello to someone that I already know is on the same page with me. And I just feel so thankful to have that understanding between us. I just have so much fun with them. They’re incredibly cool people and I’m really happy that I get to spend the summer with them.”</em> The <em>Speak Now World Tour </em>continues in the U.S. through November.
