    <span style=&quot;font-size: small;">AC/DC&rsquo;s &ldquo;Back in Black&rdquo; has been named the Top Guitar Riff of the 80s by Gibson.com. According to the site, the entire Back in Black album is quite possibly &ldquo;the greatest riff-oriented album of all time,&rdquo; but they single out the title track as the most memorable. Coming in at number two is The Rolling Stones&rsquo; &ldquo;Start Me Up,&rdquo; followed by Ozzy Osbourne&rsquo;s &ldquo;Crazy Train,&rdquo; featuring guitaristRandy Rhoads. Rounding out the Top Ten are: Scorpions&rsquo; &ldquo;Rock You Like a Hurricane, Def Leppard&rsquo;s &ldquo;Photograph, &rdquo; Judas Priest&rsquo;s &ldquo;Breaking the Law,&rdquo; Michael Jackson&rsquo;s (featuring Steve Lukather), &ldquo;Beat It,&rdquo; The Clash&rsquo;s &ldquo;Should I Stay or Should I Go,&rdquo; Guns N&rsquo; Roses&rsquo; &ldquo;Sweet Child o&rsquo; Mine&rdquo; and Rush&rsquo;s &ldquo;Limelight.&rdquo;</span>

    They say the clothes make the man, but in rock and roll, the clothes help make the band, too. Where would rock be without those flamboyant form-fitting outfits? What about glam and metal? Certainly England's the Darkness, which played a not full but fully engaged Vic Sunday night, wouldn't have packed quite the same impact minus the conviction of its skin-tight wardrobe, not least singer/guitarist Justin Hawkins' proudly ridiculous chest-baring, black-and-white-striped jumpsuit.

  10. Prog metal vets Arch / Matheos take flight at Hartford's Webster Theater on May 5

    <span style=&quot;font-size: medium;">John Arch's memory of first meeting Jim Matheos is relatively hazy, but it's easy to forgive him for that. After all, the vocalist and the guitarist at the core of the recently created progressive metal outfit Arch / Matheos were introduced to one another nearly three decades ago. Back in 1983, Arch was singing Iron Maiden tunes for a cover band when guitarist Victor Arduini saw Arch's act and invited him to come see his own. Arch headed to a place in Newington where he was introduced to Misfit, the group that would become Fates Warning and subsequently one of the crucial names in early American prog metal. Back then, Misfit also played covers, but Matheos expressed interest in originals. They wanted Arch to be part of their new venture, so they auditioned him with high-range Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Accept tracks. &ldquo;I screamed my brains out,&rdquo; the amiable vocalist says. &ldquo;Apparently, they liked what they heard even though I was definitely rough and still am at some points.&rdquo;</span>
