1. Review: Steven Spielberg's 'Lincoln' A Towering Achievement

Hollywood's most successful director turns on a dime and delivers his most restrained, interior film. A celebrated playwright shines an illuminating light on no more than a sliver of a great man's life. A brilliant actor surpasses even himself and makes us see a celebrated figure in ways we hadn't anticipated. This is the power and the surprise of <a id="ENMV0002731" class="taxInlineTagLink" title="Lincoln (movie, 2012)" href="../topic/entertainment/movies/lincoln-%28movie-2012%29-ENMV0002731.topic">"Lincoln."

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, which has slipped back into deficit territory partly because of pension fund obligations, has planned a concert to do something about that.

  7. Oscar best-song nominee J. Ralph: 'It's outrageous'

This time of year it’s common to hear many people saying, “It’s an honor just to be nominated.” But the comment sounds pretty convincing coming from Oscar-nominated film composer J. Ralph, considering the odds he beat in being recognized for his song <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/nov/19/entertainment/la-et-ms-chasing-ice-documentary-score-composer-j-ralph-20121118">“Before My Time.”

  13. Q&A: 'This is 40' star Leslie Mann and writer/director Judd Apatow

Ridiculously, unjustly, few Oscar prognosticators include “This is 40” star Leslie Mann or her husband, writer-director Judd Apatow, on lists of likely nominees. Thing is, Apatow’s a member of the Academy—will he vote for himself?

  21. 'Lincoln': A political animal of a different kind ★★★★

"Lincoln" is a grave and surprisingly subtle magic trick, conjuring the past and an almost ridiculously impressive figure in ways that transcend art direction and the right stovepipe hat. Director Steven Spielberg's latest combines the most commonly shared notions we have of our 16th U.S. president — the folksy deliberation, the spindly gait, the all-seeing eye on the prize of history remade — with the behavior, idiosyncrasies and contradictions of an actual human being. It blends cinematic Americana with something grubbier and more interesting than Americana, and it does not look, act or behave like the usual perception of a Spielberg epic. It is smaller and quieter than that.
