1. Not at Coachella? Don't worry — neither are these shows

It's April, which is good news for the roughly 180,000 music fans who have tickets to the sold-out Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, set for the weekends of April 12 and April 19. But for those who find themselves shut out of the annual festival in the desert, there are numerous noteworthy concerts happening closer to home. Most even feature modern amenities such as air conditioning, and many, in fact, include artists performing at Coachella.

  13. The xx covers 'Last Christmas' with characteristic doom, gloom

"Last Christmas," the great sad-sack holiday jam by Wham!, has been covered by countless acts since the song's release in 1984. And a good number of those interpreters -- from Jimmy Eat World to Crazy Frog to Ashley Tisdale of "High School Musical" -- did what they could to add some pep to George Michael's tale of romantic woe under the mistletoe.

  17. Surfer Blood Plays The Space in Hamden on July 22

When you think of West Palm Beach, Florida, the first thing that probably comes to mind is skimpy bikinis and golfing retirees, not indie pop. Surfer Blood, Florida's indie rock four-piece, is making waves with their short summer tour and a stop in CT Sunday, July 22 at The Space in Hamden. Hot off the success of their 2010 debut album Astro Coast and acclaimed 2011 EP Tarot Classics, the band relocated to California earlier this year to record their anticipated sophomore album with producer Gil Norton (Jimmy Eat World, the Distillers). Part surfer rock, part catchy indie pop, the band has created a sound perfect for an intimate setting and a soundtrack for the coming hot summer nights.

    The Baltimore Sun

  23. Like/dislike: Mates of State

Since the late '90s, Mates of State have been a staple of the indie rock world. The husband-and-wife duo consists of Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner, who combine keyboard, drums and vocals to create energetic harmonies. Over the past 14 years, the Lawrence, Kan. natives have released seven albums and played with bands such as Jimmy Eat World and Death Cab for Cutie. On Tuesday their travels will take them to The <a href="http://findlocal.baltimoresun.com/remington/bars-and-clubs/bars-clubs/the-ottobar-baltimore-club">Ottobar, where they will perform songs from their most recent album "Mountaintops." Here Kori gives us her take on high-waisted pants (a no-go), the Beiber movie (she cried) and more.
