7. The Hive Dwellers perform at Roots Music Hall in Hartford on April 9

Calvin Johnson is unlike any musician I've spoken to before, and I've spoken to many. This characteristic has nothing to do with his status as a musician but rather the way he talks. Johnson is best known as the stoic-voiced presence behind Beat Happening, the Halo Benders and a handful of other bands floating around the fringes of indie rock, and as the founder of the Olympia, Wash.-based K Records (a small, respected indie/punk label that's housed Modest Mouse, Bikini Kill and Kimya Dawson). Hypothetically, Johnson should make for an impulsive, brassy character in a phone interview, as K Records has been pushing on since 1982 (being involved in a DIY enterprise for decades takes some fieriness) and his own music reveals a smart, youthful spunkiness that sounds like it didn't require too much planning. Turns out, said hypothesis is junk. Instead, Johnson talks in a very measured, careful manner — a style that prefers succinct sentences, politeness, minimal joking around and prolonged periods of silence.

  17. Need a hostess gift when invited to dinner? The Times' S. Irene Virbila has a few ideas

When I spent some months in Venice, Italy, years ago, my friend Paolo would show up at dinner parties with prosciutto. I'm not talking about a paper packet of sliced ham but a whole prosciutto di San Daniele, the famous ham from Friuli, cured with the foot on. The host would hand him a glass of Prosecco, he'd pull his well-traveled prosciutto out of the bag and proceed to carve off slices as his contribution to the cicchetti (antipasti) spread. Brilliant. And after, it would go home with him to be trotted out for the next dinner party.

  21. The Oxford American's 13th Annual Music Issue: Incredible

Holy mackerel. The Oxford American’s annual music issue is always good, but this new one -- number 13 -- is a staggering piece of work. Possibly the best-ever stocking stuffer for the music nerd in your family. (It’ll pretty much fill up a stocking good.) It’s a head-shaking feat that the staff at the OA can pull off this mix of advanced-calculus-level music-writing and deep-diving obscure archive-digging compilation assembly. This year’s issue focuses on the state of Mississippi. (Last year year was Alabama, and I think this is only the second issue devoted to one specific state -- can’t wait until they get to Georgia and North Carolina.) With writers like David Gates, Roy Blount Jr., Jack Pendarvis, Rosanne Cash, Nick Hornby, Oliver Wang, Peter Guralnick, and poet Yusef Komunyakaa (!) it’s totally worth the $11 tag for brain-tickling reading. But the righteous music featured in 27-track accompanying CD is basically the most awesome mix you’re likely to acquire anytime soon.
