1. Slayer's Jeff Hanneman: 10 clips that showcase his fury

Los Angeles Times Pop Music Critic
There are times when it’s best to let the riffs, tangled leads and headbanging speak for themselves. Slayer co-founder Jeff Hanneman, who died Thursday, was by all accounts a silent, reserved presence in real life, but when he stepped onstage to...

3. Titus Andronicus is (still) poised for launch

Patrick Stickles, who is not known for his lack of vocal restraint fronting punk-rock band Titus Andronicus, comes on the phone, oddly, speaking just above a whisper. "I should warn you," he says. "I'm going to have to talk in this quiet voice, 'cause I'm on the bus."

5. Black Flag fans, after years of no band, now get two

No band from the nascent Los Angeles punk rock scene of the 1970s and '80s has meant more to subsequent hard-core generations than Black Flag. Few could have expected as much at the time.

7. Album review: Redd Kross, 'Researching the Blues'

It’s odd to think of Los Angeles punk band Redd Kross as a legacy act, considering its bassist Steven McDonald learned his instrument at age 11, shortly before he and older brother Jeff, 15, opened for Black Flag in the early ’80s. But more than three decades later, here they are, delivering the kind of fuzzed-out melodies and explosive girl-group harmonies that at their 1980s prime propelled them to near-stardom.

It's a press day for Keith Morris, frontman for the punk supergroup Off!, and the interviews are bumping against each other like elbows to rib cages in the pit at one of his shows.

15. Crafting 'Love and Rockets' with a punk attitude

Jaime Hernandez grew up on superheroes. Then something changed.

19. Album review: Off!, 'Off!'

3 stars (out of 4)
3 stars (out of 4) On its second, self-titled album (Vice), Off! doesn’t tolerate long-windedness of any kind, musical or otherwise. Solos? There is exactly one (which lasts nine seconds) among the quartet’s 16 songs; the album blurs past...

23. Album review: 'OFF!' by OFF!

Pop & Hiss
