7. Times film experts reconsider the Oscar nominees

All year, film critics tell us what they like and don't like about new movies, always moving on to the next release. But how often do we ask them to take a second look, to give us their considered opinions again once the Oscar nominations are announced? That's just what we've done in assembling L.A. Times film columnist Patrick Goldstein and Times film critics Kenneth Turan and Betsy Sharkey to talk over this year's nominees and to play Oscar Voter for a day.

  9. Filmmakers dogged pursuits earn Oscar's attention

They are now the leading contenders for the top Academy Award -- and although "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" could hardly be more different in plot, style, spirit and budget, they epitomize the increasingly perilous path artistically ambitious movies face in Hollywood.

  13. Oscar shutouts and surprises: who defied the odds

Each year, the Oscar nominations result in a pleasure-pain split in Hollywood. There's the "You like me, you really like me!" jubilation for those whose work gets honored. Then there are the bruised egos of those who early on had been touted as Oscar shoo-ins but whose work wound up unheralded by academy voters.

  15. Academy nominations don't give Kate Winslet a double chance

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has forced the cruelest result upon Kate Winslet, nominating her for best actress for her indelible performance as a onetime concentration camp guard in "The Reader" but skipping over her other acclaimed performance as a suffering suburban housewife in "Revolutionary Road," a film that happened to be directed by her husband, Sam Mendes.

  17. Screenwriter David Hare on 'The Reader'

Way back in the 1950s, when the world knew of the concentration camps mainly from documentaries, film director Jean-Luc Godard made a famously provocative remark: "If ever a film is to be made about Auschwitz, it will have to be from the point of view of the guards." Clearly, what Godard meant by this was that it would be impossible, on film, to do justice to the suffering of those who died in the camps. No drama, however well intentioned, could possibly be adequate to the events themselves. Spreading the usual hokey conventions of melodrama over this particular subject would be both gratuitous and offensive. So the only way of paying proper respect to the victims would be by trying to explain something of the motives of their tormentors.
