1. 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo': Craig, Mara star in sleek, slick, sick adaptation -- 3 stars

Director David Fincher's deluxe edition of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is the most coldly compelling version yet of the tale dreamed up by the late Stieg Larsson, whose "Millennium" trilogy of pulp novels remains the time-killer of choice in airports, elevated trains and, when the weather's right, beaches around the world.

  5. Television review: 'Hannibal' drains the mirth out of Lecter

NBC sent out five episodes of its "Silence of the Lambs" prequel "Hannibal," and although the reasons to stop watching (when in doubt, impale a woman!) too often outweighed the reasons to continue (Hugh Dancy, tracked by a dangerous dream deer), I swallowed my bile and soldiered on. And indeed, Episode 5 proved an epiphany. No spoilers here, but it costars Eddie Izzard, whose natural gift for twinkling malice threw everything into perspective.

If you are sensitive to bloody images of horrible murder, you might not want to watch the new serial killer drama "The Following" (8 p.m. CT Jan. 21, Fox; 3 stars out of 4). If you like to be scared to the point of watching through interlocked fingers, then tune in.

  17. Sun's non-stop coverage of murder outrageous

In the 1960s when I was a beat reporter for a daily newspaper in Virginia and later taught journalism, many would snicker, "if it bleeds, it leads." Yet bleeding leads sold papers, and 40 years ago, even decent publications sometimes indulged. However,...
