  9. The Underground aims to take krump from the street to the stage

In a small Inglewood house near the end of a quiet, dead-end street, Marquisa "Miss Prissy" Gardner and Christopher "Lil' C" Toler are mock arguing about a bag of Martha's burritos he's carrying. "You didn't bring me any?" she taunts. "Chris-TOE-pher!"

  11. Herman Wouk, a novel force

The year Herman Wouk was born, Woodrow Wilson was in his first term in the White House, the Lusitania's sinking was on the front page and "The Birth of a Nation" was playing in silent movie theaters. In the 97 years since, with such books as "The Caine Mutiny," "Marjorie Morningstar and "The Winds of War," Wouk became a force in American letters, and in film and television as well. His latest novel, "The Lawgiver," tells the tale of a Hollywood struggle to make a movie about Moses. Wouk's modern story about the ancient and long-lived biblical hero unfolds via text messages, emails and plain old-fashioned letters. And he's made himself and his late wife, Betty Sarah, characters in the book. Wouk is a devotee of Skype, which is how he talked to me from his Palm Springshome.

  13. Road to good reading may be paved in cheesy books

Name a book that shaped you as a person, as a reader.
Name a book that shaped you as a person, as a reader. This book should be something you would call "a book that mattered" or "a favorite piece of literature." I had to pick such a book the other day after being invited, along with a dozen other people,...

  15. Is it an earthquake, or simply a shock?

Whatever its literary merits, “Fifty Shades of Grey” can take credit for a few things. The phenomenal best-seller has brought kinky erotica out from under the covers and into the mainstream. It has provided comedians and parodists with ripe fodder for jokes and spoofs. And it has inspired some previously buttoned-up couples — such as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy — to get their freak on.

  17. Oscar Nominations for 2012

All my friends think I wake up early for the Oscar nominations. It’s baffling how little they know me. I love nothing more in life than sleeping in. And why wake up early to pull an Elvis and shoot the TV screen at the idiotic nominations that always end up irking me?

  19. Bookmark: Biopics can't match great reads about famous people

She's got the look. She's also got the walk, the talk and the wardrobe. When Michelle Williams pouts and flounces and oozes her way across the screen in "My Week With Marilyn," giving herself unreservedly to the role of a tormented yet still-alluring...
