  1. Readers open to ambiguity

Endings are never easy, and open-ended endings — fantastic paradox! — remind us of the art involved with movie endings that tantalize without nailing down a single explanation or conclusion.

  3. Outdoor movies please audiences in dozens of Florida cities

The big, green, Grinchy face of Jim Carrey flickered on a 25-foot-high inflatable screen in front of Jason Davis as the aroma of fresh popcorn washed over the lawn of Leesburg City Hall.

  7. Review: Menacing Tom Hardy gives 'The Take' brutal bite

Keep your eyes on Tom Hardy. Before the Brit starred in films like &quot;Inception" or this year's "Warrior," he scorched the small screen as thuggish Freddie Jackson in the 2009 British miniseries "The Take" (<em>8 p.m. Friday, Encore; 3.5 stars</em>).

  9. Why renters and pirates watch such different movies

    24 Frames
I'm just as obsessed with lists as everyone else, so it caught my eye the other day when Time put two lists up against each other--the most rented movies at Netflix vs. the most illegally downloaded movies from TorrentFreak. The comparison was eye-...

  11. The evolving images of 9/11

The first screening of &quot; The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" came just weeks after the attacks of Sept. 11. The movie had been in the works for years, the first in a trilogy based on novels that had been written decades earlier, of course, by an Englishman named J.R.R. Tolkien during Hitler's rise to power and World War II. And yet the first minute of the film delivered a queasy jolt of immediacy, a chill of recognition. It opened with no image, and very faint background music, little but a black screen and Cate Blanchett's mournful voice, reciting what sounded like, that autumn day, either a prayer or the most poetic 9/11 editorial no one had written yet:

  15. Movie review: '50/50'

As its title unintentionally indicates, &quot;50/50" walks a very tricky line. As a comedy about a young man with cancer, it needs to be serious enough to be real as well as light enough to be funny. Though it falls off the wagon at times, it maintains its balance remarkably well.

Pretty much the grown-up version of &quot;Kick-Ass," this dark, well-cast comedy stars Rainn Wilson ("The Office") as a self-styled superhero who hits the streets as the Crimson Bolt after his ex-drug addict wife (Liv Tyler) runs off with a dealer (Kevin Bacon).

  21. China is on a cinema-building binge

Not long ago when Zhang Guomiao wanted to see a film, he'd head for the village square. There, itinerant cinema operators would unfurl a canvas screen, set up some static-filled speakers and show a grainy movie in the open air.

  23. Legendary Pictures to produce movies in China through joint venture

In the last few years China has emerged as one of the world's fastest-growing movie markets, but government restrictions have limited the ability of American studios to export their films there. Now a top Hollywood finance and production company is turning that formula around with a deal to make big-budget movies in China for export around the world.
