  5. 'Gimme the Loot' director says film 'hit the jackpot'

With its loose, freewheeling style, the unassuming "Gimme the Loot" has already led something of a charmed life. The film picked up the grand jury prize when it premiered at the South by Southwest film festival last year, going on to play the prestigious New Directors/New Films series in New York and be an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival. It was then nominated for two Spirit Awards, earning writer-director Adam Leon the "Someone to Watch" award.

  7. Oscars speeches: Honestly sincere, or expertly faked?

    Los Angeles looks lush.
Los Angeles looks lush. But as often noted, it is actually an arid wasteland where nothing but artifice and self-interest sprouts naturally. That's the cynical, archetypal reading. For instance, two thirds of the way into Nathanael West's cynical,...

  13. 'Silver Linings Playbook' snags Spirit awards

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — The persistent irony of the Film Independent Spirit Awards is that as much as they're positioned as the DIY antidote to the Academy Awards, the indie film with the most Oscars recognition almost invariably reaps the greatest rewards.

  19. Guide to February 2013 TV premieres, specials, movies

Every February we celebrate Valentine's Day and Black History Month, but this one is extra special because we welcome NBC's "Community" back to TV after too long a hiatus. It's also when the high-profile Netflix series, "House of Cards," debuts. Back on the regular TV, "The Walking Dead" and "SouthLand" are back. As usual, I may have missed something, so let me know. As a member of the board of the award-bestowing National Book Critics Circle, I tend to look to the National Book Awards as a popular big brother: They are the football to our field hockey, the Oscars to our Independent Spirit Awards, the prizes that tend to capture the public's attention. Both have their place, and the place of the <a href=&quot;http://www.nationalbook.org/">National Book Awards</a> is to lead the national conversation about books.
