1. 'Rectify' TV review: Tense, beautiful 'Rectify' rewards patience

In the second hour of Sundance Channel's incredibly absorbing new series "Rectify," Daniel Holden takes off his shoes and socks in the outfield of a baseball diamond. He revels at the feel of grass between his toes and the sun on his face, two sensations he hadn't experienced in the 19 years he spent on death row.

  3. Review: Turgid '6 Souls' could use more personality

Beware the horror-thriller about personality disorder that suffers from its own fractious splits in title, mood and logic.

  11. TV Picks: Diplomacy, murder, love, art and war

"The Island President" (PBS, Monday, 10 p.m.). Comprising 2,000 pancake-flat islands in the Indian Ocean, with a mean elevation of about five feet above sea level, the Maldives will be the first nation to go, literally, when the oceans rise. Jon Shenk's documentary follows then-president Mohamed Nasheed on a mission to save his country, his people and maybe the world. A frequently jailed activist who once spent 18 months in solitary confinement in a corrugated iron shed, Nasheed hits the road to make his quixotic case for environmental responsibility. "We in the Maldives desperately want to believe that one day our words will have an effect," he declares to the United Nations, "and so we continue to shout them even though we know you're not really listening." Handsomely shot and smartly edited, it works as a sort of dry, dark comedy of international diplomacy as seen from a low vantage point, as a soundtrack of Radiohead songs (the instrumental bits mostly) reminds you that this stuff is serious.

  13. Mariel Hemingway urges change to help others find a personal best

Mariel Hemingway, makeup-free and in sweats, is gorgeous. That bone structure, her cheetah-like build and flowing hair have been familiar for decades. What's disarming is her forthright approach to a rough family history and her determination to live the happy and healthy life that eluded so many of her relatives.

  15. Review: 'Filly Brown' a fierce tale of a promising hip-hop rapper

Rapper Filly Brown (Gina Rodriguez) is tomboyish and politicized, spitting lines like "Do you even see the Latinos serving you Chinese?" over a flamenco-inspired beat. She's the sound of Los Angeles — and so too is her eponymous movie "Filly Brown," which even gives a key role to local Power 106 DJ Khool-Aid and her weekly syndicated Latin hip-hop show, "Pocos Pero Locos."

  17. 'Simon Killer' gets a reprieve

"Simon Killer" was among the most divisive entries at the Sundance Film Festival when it premiered there in 2012. While it struck some as a chilling, unblinking look at the descent into violence and madness of a young American in Paris, to others the film was hard to take. One critic recently called it simply "icky."
