1. Predictions: Golden Globes 2013--movies

No matter who wins or loses Sunday, the 2013 Golden Globes ceremony obviously will be awesome because Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler are hosting. Really: That should be enough to make even the most awards show-averse movie/TV fans tune in.

  13. Gov. Jerry Brown could learn a lesson from 'Lincoln'

SACRAMENTO — The movie "Lincoln" should be required viewing for all elected chief executives from president to mayor, and especially for California's governor. Especially our governor because California has so many perplexing, polarizing...

I'm pretty sure we can account for three of the best-male-actor nominees when the Academy Awards lists come out on Jan. 10. I've just seen a trio of excellent performances: Denzel Washington in "Flight," Daniel Day-Lewis in "Lincoln" and John Hawkes in...

  21. The Times' top 25 college football teams

The Southeastern Conference, taken out of the national title hunt for as long as three non-SEC teams keep winning, mostly takes the week off as it openly cheers for upsets of Oregon, Kansas State and Notre Dame. SEC schools bully up to play seven 1-AA schools this week, which is seven more than Notre Dame, USC and UCLA have ever scheduled. The SEC is believed to be the first league to stage an exhibition season inside a regular season, but the scary part is Alabama A&M might beat Auburn. And if Florida thought Louisiana Lafayette was tough last week, well, watch out for Jacksonville State. In keeping with the SEC's time-honored November tradition, Rankman has scheduled mostly 1-AA level comments this week.

  23. 'Lincoln': A political animal of a different kind ★★★★

"Lincoln" is a grave and surprisingly subtle magic trick, conjuring the past and an almost ridiculously impressive figure in ways that transcend art direction and the right stovepipe hat. Director Steven Spielberg's latest combines the most commonly shared notions we have of our 16th U.S. president — the folksy deliberation, the spindly gait, the all-seeing eye on the prize of history remade — with the behavior, idiosyncrasies and contradictions of an actual human being. It blends cinematic Americana with something grubbier and more interesting than Americana, and it does not look, act or behave like the usual perception of a Spielberg epic. It is smaller and quieter than that.
