  1. Oscar shutouts and surprises: who defied the odds

Each year, the Oscar nominations result in a pleasure-pain split in Hollywood. There's the "You like me, you really like me!" jubilation for those whose work gets honored. Then there are the bruised egos of those who early on had been touted as Oscar shoo-ins but whose work wound up unheralded by academy voters.

    Zap2It.com

  9. The academy does Kate Winslet no favors

Now that the Oscar nominations are out, let us tear ourselves away from that wacky Benjamin Button and consider instead the Curious Case of Kate Winslet, who cannot seem to catch a break.

  11. Palme d'Or goes to France's 'Entre les Murs'

What a difference 21 years makes.
    Times Movie Critic
What a difference 21 years makes. In 1987, the last time a French film won the Palme d'Or, the audience at the Palais du Festival was so angry at the choice of "Under the Sun of Satan" that it hooted furiously and the director, Maurice Pialat, yelled...

" The Duchess." "W." " Changeling." " Defiance." "Frost/Nixon." "Milk." " Valkyrie." "Che." What do these films have in common, other than succinct titles? All are based on real people and events, and all happen to have release dates timed to award season.

  15. Angelina Jolie talks 'Changeling,' motherhood

Angelina Jolie appeared at the double-wide doorway of a penthouse suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel unsmiling and peering warily from behind a curtain of dark hair. Attired in an opalescent, knee-skimming silk dress, she seemed grave -- imperious and businesslike enough to give German Chancellor Angela Merkel a run for her new ranking as most powerful woman in the world. The actress was flanked by her manager, publicist and two burly security guards; together the pack had come from an adjoining suite where Jolie's team of hairstylists and makeup artists had just finished plying their trade.

  23. Movie review: Changeling -- 3 out of 5 stars

Angelina Jolie , who won her Oscar by playing mentally ill in Girl Interrupted, returns to the psyche ward for Clint Eastwood's Changeling, a movie he might have titled Motherhood Interrupted. It's a period piece, a true-crime mystery and a slice of history, vintage Eastwood in many ways. If the film is too long and a little unwieldy in its later acts, the consummate craftsman in Eastwood glosses over that with detail and righteous rage.
