1. 'Black Rock' review: Woman-hunt tale whose only suspense is waiting for it to get better

Reuters
LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - I kept forgiving "Black Rock" for being a so-so action movie because I was waiting for it to turn into something else: a rumination on gender roles, perhaps, or even an examination of the government's ambivalent response to the...

3. Katie Aselton, Lake Bell and Kate Bosworth survive 'Black Rock'

The premise is familiar: Three young women on a camping trip find themselves under siege from three unhinged attackers and fight back. But what happens in “Black Rock” is unexpected, as rather than a more typical story of female empowerment and revenge, the film explores issues of friendship and the primal bonds that come to connect people to one another.

5. Q&A: 'Black Rock' star/director Katie Aselton

As Jenny on FX’s “The League,” Katie Aselton frequently engages in the foul-mouthed, trash-talking fantasy football obsession more commonly associated with the other, hairier half of humanity.

7. 'Black Rock' review: Dishonorable discharge

** (out of four)
** (out of four) The hunted-in-the-woods thriller “Black Rock” would excite a lot more fans if Mark Duplass had finished writing the script. Instead, Duplass (the weak “Jeff, Who Lives At Home,” the fantastic “The Puffy...

9. Black Rock': When camping trips collide, bad stuff ensues ★★ 1/2

"Black Rock" pits three women, camping on a remote island off the coast of Maine, against a trio of U.S. Army veterans back from messed-up tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is where we find ourselves with the legacy of America's Iraq invasion: Apparently enough years have passed, coinciding with the proper quota of well-meaning screen portrayals of psychologically and/or physically damaged military personnel, so that a movie just out for a jolt or two can go the "crazed Vietnam vet" route with impunity. But with a more recent war.

Cloud Atlas is certainly the most ambitious of this week's titles. With a budget of over $100,000,000, the film is one of the most expensive independent films made to date. Nominated for a Golden Globe award, the film involves cast members playing...

13. Review: 'Maron' on IFC features a curmudgeonly comic

15. TV picks: 'Community,' 'Schumer,' 'Maron,' Sagal

"Community" (NBC, Thursday). The low-rated and much-beloved comedy about a study group at a community college that is not about a study group at a community college so much as it is a comedy about a comedy about a study group at a community college that is only incidentally a study group — and so on — concludes its fourth and possibly last season this week. (The first without cashiered creator and showrunner Dan Harmon, it was delayed from October to February, with the odd effect of airing its Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes in early spring.) At some point in its first year the show jettisoned any pretense of sticking to its premise and embraced its true nature, as an avant-garde meta comedy that, at its best, plays with form and content with an almost childlike glee. (It's actually more of a meta-meta-comedy, which takes note of its own awareness of its awareness — and so on.) That's a tough thing to pull off week after week, season after season — after you've proved you can do anything, and have done it again and again, some of the thrill is bound to be lost — and there were times this year that the show seemed unfocused and obvious. In trying to find a way between invention and feeling, it could grow conventionally, rather than unconventionally, sentimental, or too eager to point out the smart thing it was doing. But it has been finding its feet again: There have been fine, surprising episodes of late — the puppet musical, the one in real time — and its ensemble is one of TV's greatest. See it now.

17. Marc Maron gets real — sorta — on IFC’s “Maron”

Channel Guide Magazine
Maron Friday, May 3 IFC, 10pm ET Marc Maron is in a good place. Such a simple sentence, but it’s taken so much to make it a reality. A few years ago, the acerbic comedian was reeling financially and emotionally from his second divorce and a...
