1. Gates Arrest

Hoping to address the controversy following his Wednesday night news conference President Barack Obama made an impromptu appearance at the daily White House briefing. He said his comment that police "acted stupidly" in arresting a black scholar was an unfortunate choice of words.

  11. We asked for it

THERE'S A 9/11 waiting to happen in the oceans if we let it," retired Adm. James Watkins, chairman of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, warned two years ago. With Hurricane Katrina, we let it happen. A huge natural disaster was hugely magnified by greed, folly and a refusal to respond to a situation long recognized as critical.

If the last two seasons' abysmal swoon and record doesn't speak for itself, how can we Sox fans help get Mr. Reinsdorf to terminate Messrs. Williams and Guillen? Williams just took Guillen off the hook. Give me a break ... what has Ozzie done to...

POINT CELESTE, La. — About 40 miles farther inland from here, around the periphery of one of America's most vulnerable major cities, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is engaged in a furious $15 billion construction effort to rebuild the ring of concrete levees and steel floodgates that are supposed to protect New Orleans from catastrophic flooding when the next big hurricane blows ashore.

  21. Anna Marie Island's Harrington House: Whole year is like a holiday

I did not get the chance to see the official White House Christmas tree this year but I was present when a look-alike was decorated on the Gulf Coast, in Holmes Beach, at my favorite beachfront bed-and-breakfast, the Harrington House on Anna Maria Island. It too stood 181/2 feet tall and was a Fraser fir from the North. Not the north of Endeavor, Wisconsin, which cut and shipped to the White House, but Northern Michigan, where a Sarasota Christmas tree entrepreneur had seen it and selected it for the Harrington House.
