  1. 'Odd Life of Timothy Green' a tale of a little green sprout ★★ 1/2

"The Odd Life of Timothy Green" is odd indeed. It comes from writer-director Peter Hedges of "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" and other pictures, and in pleasing ways as well as some dubious ones, Hedges ranges all over the place in his expansion of a story credited to Ahmet Zappa, Frank's son.

  3. DVD review: 'End of the Road' weirder, more abstract than the book

John Barth surely ranks among the least screen-adaptable modern (or, perhaps, postmodern) American novelists. His stories are about themselves; the words, their own subject. It's not surprising that only one of his books has made it to the big screen. In fact, what's surprising is that any of them did. On the other hand, Michael Winterbottom managed to turn the least-adaptable novel of all time, Laurence Sterne's “Tristram Shandy,” into the terrific 2005 “Cock and Bull Story,” so I suppose nothing's impossible.

  7. Zhang Yimou remakes the Coen brothers' 'Blood Simple'

In the autumn of 2008, China's best-known filmmaker, Zhang Yimou, found himself at a career crossroads.
    Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
In the autumn of 2008, China's best-known filmmaker, Zhang Yimou, found himself at a career crossroads. The multiple Oscar nominee had spent the previous two years away from movies, orchestrating the opening and closing ceremonies for Beijing's Olympics,...

Friday, 1.21: M. Emmet Walsh and "Blood Simple" @ the Cinefamily Before they shot “True Grit,” hell, before they saw the Dude roam L.A. or a family set to ruin in Fargo, the Coen brothers made a hard, lean thriller that set up the rest of their c...

  11. Chairman of the Board

    SPECIAL TO THE TIMES
Monday March 16, 1998      Carrot Top, whose frazzled, fright-wiggy red locks remain his most finely developed gag, inspires marvel among many in the comedy world, mainly because he still manages to find work despite an almost utter lack of talent. The...

  13. 'Racing Stripes'

In the live-action talking animal genre, "Racing Stripes" is no "Babe" but should delight youngsters, although parents likely will find it is sentimental in the extreme, with a plot that telegraphs every development. Efficiently directed, however, by Frederik Du Chau from David F. Schmidt's script, the film is populated with endearing animals that are expertly anthropomorphized and that are voiced by, among others, a sprinkling of famous names, including Dustin Hoffman, no less.

  15. 'Christmas With the Kranks'

Are people serious when they say Hollywood is out of touch with Middle America? Because Columbia Pictures, it appears, is dreaming of a red-state Christmas this year. Adapted by Chris Columbus from John Grisham's "Skipping Christmas," and directed by Revolution Studios head Joe Roth, "Christmas With the Kranks" is a flat parable about the virtues of homespun conformity and the perils of defying family tradition — the kind of family tradition that runs up the credit card balance, helping retailers reach their holiday projections.

    Special to The Times
Remember those live-action Disney features in which Dean Jones or, reaching back earlier, Fred MacMurray would play a hapless grown-up at odds with kids, animals and/or enchanted cars? Good, bad or indifferent, those movies were, for children of a certain...

    FOR THE TIMES
