1. Cast a cold eye

Ladies and gentlemen, let's compare and contrast. In her blockbuster first novel, "A Woman of Substance," Barbara Taylor Bradford pitted her fiercely determined heroine against almost insurmountable obstacles: grinding poverty, physical abuse, sexual assault, romantic betrayal, and the machinations of a powerful and pitiless nemesis. In her latest book, "Letter from A Stranger," Bradford's sweet and accommodating heroine lives a charmed life, her manners flawless, her profession glamorous, her predicament such that she is forced -- just forced! -- to jet off to sunny Istanbul, where she eats delicious meals, sleeps in elegant accommodations and discovers a riveting memoir of life in Nazi Germany. Is it possible, based on the aforementioned evidence, that Bradford, the author of 27 international bestsellers, has, well, mellowed?

3. Film review: Joe Carnahan's 'The Grey' has a bit of an overbite

"The Grey” was probably pitched as something like “’Alive’ Meets Jack London's 'To Start a Fire' Meets ‘Wolfen,’” or maybe “Jaws — But Wolf Jaws, Not Shark Jaws.” It combines aspects of all of these and a bunch more. Whether you'll warm to this frigid Arctic (or sub-Arctic?) adventure will depend largely on your feelings about the genre.

5. Battleship

Mr. Board was bored watching a movie based on a board game. Although I think it’s false to keep stating in reviews and press releases that this is based on the Hasboro game. It’s an alien invasion film with battleships. Other than missiles shaped similar to the game pieces, this has nothing to do with the game; unless my memory from playing it with my brother 30 years ago is wrong. We’d merely yell out “F8,” and we’d hear “hit” or “miss.”

17. 'Battleship' review: Mind-numbingly entertaining

*** (out of four)
*** (out of four) If you think stupidity is an automatic movie deal-breaker, don't see an action spectacle about aliens attacking military vessels that's thinly based on a board game. Entertainment doesn't always require smarts, though, and the...
