  15. 'Edmond'

When "Edmond" was first performed on stage in the early 1980s, it was possible, especially in those early "Morning in America" Reagan years, to recognize David Mamet's play as a timely dissection of what is now commonly referred to as the Angry White Male. Indeed, Mamet implies that Reagan's rise largely emerged from the amorphous, seething resentments of its eponymous antihero, a white-collar mouse-turned-monster whose last name, Burke, makes a not-so-indirect reference to modern conservatism's patron saint. The resentments remain intact in the new filmed version of "Edmond."

  17. 'The Omen'

Look, it's a business venture. Nobody expects a remake of the 1976 devil-may-care hit "The Omen" to win the Palme d'Anything. All anybody wants from it is entertaining junk with a little atmosphere, and maybe a fresh idea or two regarding how to scare an audience. This is, after all, a story not about a bad seed, but the worst seed ever.

  23. 'She's the Man'

Just so everyone is on the same page: "She's the Man" is a modern-day reworking of William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," tweaked in order to allow TV goofball Amanda Bynes to play the cross-dressing Viola -- who, in this version, bends genders to pose as her brother Sebastian in order to get her big break on the boys' soccer team of rival prep school Illyria in the big game against her own alma mater of Cornwall. Love ensues, along with much confusion as to who loves whom, and who's got what under whose trousers.
