5. Film review: It's worth getting a second 'Tattoo'

As a general rule, roughly 99% of remakes fall somewhere between the awful and the utterly redundant — particularly when there was nothing wrong with the original. But, in Hollywood terms, there was one thing fatally wrong about the original “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”: Everyone in it was speaking Swedish.

  15. Oscar nominees take a look back with 'New Nostalgia'

A couple of years ago, Bruce Sheridan, chair of the film program at Columbia College, noticed a curious thing happening. A few of the film majors who interned on the Chicago production of "The Dark Knight" had started making their student films and, as expected,Christopher Nolan's brooding, zeitgeisty, state-of-the-union-address of a superhero epic was a big influence. Less expected was the sort of movies it inspired. Film students have always gravitated to the shadows and stark lighting of classic noir; and Batman is the most noir-y of superheroes. Sheridan planned to see lots of noir. What he got were wide open urban spaces.

  19. CD of the Week: Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Soundtrack

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's previous soundtrack, for David Fincher's 2010 film The Social Network, had a vintage-synth, techno vibe; here you'll find more strings, pads, chimes, strange, toneless gamelan strikes, churning industrial bass and, overall, sparser (Nordic?) textures. The three main tropes — suspense/action (“A Thousand Details,” the John Carpenter-inspired “Pinned and Mounted,” the gamelan-inflected “Hidden In Snow”), reflection/discovery (“What If We Could?” “One Particular Moment,” “I Can't Take it Anymore”) and discomfort/disorientation (the six-minute squirm-noise “Perihelion”) — bleed considerably into each other. The terrifying “We Could Wait Forever” plays out like a Rorschach test: if you're anxious to begin with, prepare to be more anxious. Indie darling Karen O (the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) screams through (is there any other way?) Led Zep's “Immigrant Song,” and How to Destroy Angels, a Reznor/Ross side project with Reznor's wife, Mariqueen Maandig, contributes some mid-tempo, end-credit prettiness.
