  1. 'The Dictator'

Sacha Baron Cohen is back at it -- though his similarly satirical turns as Borat and Bruno, also done with director Larry Charles, had more bite -- in this comedy about a tyrannical foreign leader who comes to America and finds himself swept up in a series of very unexpected adventures.

  13. 'We Need to Talk About Kevin': When mother's intuition is bleakly on the money -- 2 stars

Or do we? "We Need to Talk About Kevin" is artfully visualized but, at heart, little more than "The Bad Seed and How!" Director and co-writer Lynne Ramsay's adaptation of the Lionel Shriver novel complicates Shriver's story structure while simplifying Shriver's meanings, along with her provocative, mixed-up explorations of parental guilt.

  15. Film review: 'The Dictator' is humorous, but stretches bad taste

Sacha Baron Cohen's central shtick — semi-documentary episodes in which he entraps real people — has always, by its nature, had a built-in self-destruct mechanism. The more famous he becomes, the less likely that anyone will fall for his masquerades as Ali G, Borat and Bruno. With “The Dictator,” he finally abandons his “Candid Camera”-like stunts for a fully written script — perhaps with some improvisation — acted by professionals. In other words: No innocent bystanders were humiliated in the production of this motion picture.

  17. Film Review: 'Carnage' a confined comedy of bad manners

Structurally, Roman Polanski's “Carnage” hearkens back to his first feature, “Knife in the Water” (1962). “When a handful of people are stuck in a confined space, the layers of civilized social convention are peeled away, revealing hidden savagery beneath”: that would serve nicely as a TV schedule description of either film. “Knife in the Water” showed a couple and one stranger on a yacht; “Carnage,” two couples in the living room of a New York apartment.
