1. 'Freedomland'

It's late, in a rough part of town, and a bedraggled blond shuffles down streets that positively shimmer with menace. The woman is oblivious, possibly on drugs, as she trudges listlessly past steaming grates, trailing lights, spooked cats, police protests, candlelight vigils and Samuel L. Jackson sitting in a car, looking troubled. Wandering into a hospital, she holds up her bloodied palms. What's going on? In the fluorescent lights, a few things become clear. The blond is no blond. She's Julianne Moore. And, yes, in fact, she has misplaced another kid.

7. Glam and politics return to the Oscar show

Tribune movie reporter
The bombs started raining on Baghdad two days before the stars were scheduled to reign at last year's 75th annual Academy Awards. Much hair tugging (or, at least, hair extensions tugging) followed. Would the show go on? Should it? Was it right for...

9. Academy sticks to a tame script

Sun Television Critic
The motion picture academy's insistence on decorum in the wake of Janet Jackson's Super Bowl debacle gave last night's telecast of 76th Annual Academy Awards all the unpredictability of a sitcom rerun. ABC had hoped to attract the much-coveted young male...

17. 'Tears of the Sun'

"Tears of the Sun" may make you weep, but not in the way anyone intended. Handsomely made, well-meaning but finally frustrating and unsatisfying, this perplexing film is an example of a previously unseen hybrid, the socially conscious, humanitarian action movie. It doesn't appear to be a genre with much of a future.

23. 'The Forgotten'

If you've seen the trailer for "The Forgotten," you've seen a woodland cabin explode and a federal agent get sucked into the sky as if by some kind of cosmic Dustbuster. In other words, you've probably already gathered that "The Forgotten" is more than a quietly creepy psychological thriller.
