1. Rediscovering Douglas Fairbanks

Decades before Errol Flynn, Tyrone Power and Johnny Depp became swashbuckling cinematic heroes, Douglas Fairbanks dashed across the screen with the greatest of athletic ease in such extravaganzas as "The Mark of Zorro," "The Iron Mask" and "The Black Pirate."

3. What's with Mel's bloody porn?

RICHARD SCHICKEL is a film critic for Time and the author of many books, including "Elia Kazan: A Biography."
MOVIES ARE, in their nature, violent. Every shot in every film begins with the director calling "action," and more often than not — more often, certainly, than in real life — someone gets hit, stomped, blown away or otherwise seriously maimed....

5. U.S. Highway 395: California's 'mother road'

Times Staff Writer
EVERY road sings its own tune. Route 66 is a classic, sometimes raucous ditty from Chicago to L.A.; Highway 1 a twisty ballad to the voluptuous California coast; and U.S. 395 a mandolin-driven ode to the West that evokes images of cowboy boots and...

"This is a unique destination where you are allowed on a military post, visit [one] of the 21 missions and stay overnight at Hearst's private lodge," says reader Lloyd van Horsen of Santa Barbara, in recommending Ft. Hunter Liggett.

9. Damage control for Robin Hood?

When I was at the industry premiere the other night for "State of Play," sandwiched between Hollywood agents, the reaction to seeing Russell Crowe for the first time on screen as the film's investigative journalist was pretty blunt -- as in "OMG, is he...

13. 'Me Cheeta: My Life in Hollywood' by Cheeta the Chimp

Rin Tin Tin and I are into what we call "extreme romping." Once a week, we head for the back country, where we leap crags and ford rivers -- just like in the movies, except there are no bad guys. Last week, before beginning our trip home, he mentioned that Cheeta the Chimp had just written "Me Cheeta: My Life in Hollywood" and asked if I'd read it.

15. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End'

"Pirates of the Caribbean" has had quite a ride, and I wouldn't bet that it's over, despite the seeming finality of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," the most visually spectacular, action-packed and surreal of the adventures of Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).

17. DVD set spotlights Myrna Loy and William Powell

There were many memorable screen teams during Hollywood's dream factory era -- Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. But none made as many features together as MGM's William Powell and Myrna Loy -- 13 films over a 14-year period.

19. Her return engagement

Olivia de Hallivand, the last remaining great Hollywood star of both the golden '30s and '40s, is an irresistible woman. When the subject of birthdays comes up in the middle of an interview, she looks the writer straight in the eye and declares, "I'm old enough to be your mother!," promptly brushing aside all polite demurrals. There's something at once amusing and touching when the remark is directed at a man on the cusp of 70 and comes from a movie star who's about to turn 90. Clearly the truthfulness that characterizes De Havilland's acting comes from the woman herself.

21. Review: 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull'

It's the summer's most anticipated film, the latest in a beloved series that's earned $1.2 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Add in a premiere at the most prestigious of international film festivals, and the wonder of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is that it avoids being an anticlimax and is entertaining in its own right.
