1. 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' on Broadway: Johansson's heat is only half the story

NEW YORK — As Tennessee Williams understood better than almost any other scribe who ever stared down a typewriter, anger and need are not the same thing. In a lousy marriage — such as the one between Margaret and Brick in Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" — the two get conflated, of course, as anyone who has screamed at a partner in frustration from some unmet desire well knows. But like most of Williams' struggling souls, Maggie isn't annoyed in the way one gets annoyed, say, when one's deal isn't honored or one's plane is overbooked. She and her handsome, athletic hubby are both trapped in a hot mess of pain, unable to mutually twist their bodies in a way that might bring at least one of them some relief.

9. TV Gal Recommends Character Rehab

A couple of weeks ago when I was watching "The Office," the strangest thing happened. I actually felt sorry for Roy and -- stop the paper mill -– I was kind of rooting for him. What was happening to me? Part of it may be that Jim's charming flirtation with Karen has made it seem like he has a girl in every office port (not that there's anything wrong with that, I've already sent him directions to where I work). But part of it is that Roy has been through character rehab this season. Suddenly, he's more sympathetic, more sensitive and more caring. He's not the jerk we once knew and we're starting to understand why Pam fell for him in the first place.

11. 'The Year of the Yao' and 'Milwaukee, Minnesota'

You won't find "The Year of the Yao" on a Chinese lunar calendar, but the 2002-03 NBA season to which it refers was an eventful one for basketball fans and cultural watchdogs around the world. It was the year that Shanghai's Yao Ming made the leap to the NBA, the subject of a glossy documentary by James D. Stern and Adam Del Deo. Not yet 22 years old when he was selected first in the 2002 NBA draft by the Houston Rockets, Yao was under tremendous pressure from a nationalistically minded homeland eager to see him make good and from many basketball insiders dubious of the 7-foot-6 center's ability to translate his height advantage to in-the-paint dominance against aggressive rivals such as then-Laker star Shaquille O'Neal.

We know they're not real.

We know they're not real. Of course when we watch a TV series we know it's make-believe. We know Burke is really not operating with a hand tremor. We know that Grissom and Sara aren't really having a clandestine affair. And we certainly know that Bree...

FOR THE TIMES
Friday May 12, 2000 From "The Red Shoes" to "The Turning Point," dramatic films about the ballet world have begged the question: How is it that such a serious and disciplined performing art attracts such silly and chaotic people? The callow...

19. 'Palindromes'

"Palindromes" begins at the funeral of Dawn Wiener, the hapless heroine of Todd Solondz's second theatrical release, with a video camera trained on her pine coffin as her brother delivers a backhanded eulogy. Dawn has put an end to the almanac of bummers that was her life by committing suicide, and an insensitive comment by her sister Missy (whom we never see but whose toxic pronouncements bookend the film like a pair of kicks to the head) leads Aviva, their achingly insecure 13-year-old cousin, to fret that she's headed down a similar path.
