7. 'Let's Go to Prison'

Special to The Times
When a comedy isn't screened for critics, you can expect a rough ride. "Let's Go to Prison," directed by Bob Odenkirk (of TV's "Mr. Show") and written by several folks involved with "Reno 911!," "Herbie: Fully Loaded" and "Taxi" — the Jimmy Fallon...

9. 'Employee of the Month'

Dane Cook, the worst movie leading man since -- Pauly Shore? No? Toby Keith! -- makes his starring debut in "Employee of the Month." He mastered the moves of a slacker who's fallen into a "career" at a Sam's Club clone -- literally "skating" through a job he hates with other losers in little blue vests. He just doesn't do anything funny or show any screen presence as he runs through those moves.

11. 'Idiocracy'

What does Mike Judge have to do to get a movie released and marketed? He could stop making satires as merciless and spot-on as this one, for one thing. His second film in seven years, "Idiocracy," was completed nearly two years ago and dumped on Friday, reviewless and unmarketed, in six markets not including New York and San Francisco. (Because who could possibly be interested in the long-awaited movie by the director of "Office Space" there?) It's this sort of vote of no-confidence that gets people wondering — just how bad could it be? Which raises the issue of what "bad" means to the studio that unleashed "Date Movie" and "Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties" on an unsuspecting populace.

So there's this magic board game ... If the trailers for "Zathura: A Space Adventure" seemed a little familiar, well, there's a reason: The children's book on which Jon Favreau's film is based is the latest magic-board-game tome by Chris Van Allsburg,...

17. DVD Review: 'Idiocracy'

A brilliant essay on how to keep audiences away from a film could be written based on 20th Century Fox's dire treatment of Mike Judge's "Idiocracy," a satire on the dangers of corporatized America that was, appropriately, crushed by corporate America.

19. 'Without a Paddle'

"Without a Paddle," a low-hanging, late-summer comedy starring Seth Green, Matthew Lillard and Dax Shepard, owes more than just its title to a toilet-related idiom. Halfway up the creek, our heroes encounter a pair of tree-dwelling preservationists whose strict adherence to the Outward Bound pledge to "leave no trace" unexpectedly saves them during an ambush. Also, the familiar expression about the self-evidence of ursine bathroom habits acts as a hinge for a major plot point later. Are you familiar with the expression? Is the pope Catholic?
