3. 'Dangerous Method' a nuanced Freudian trip – 3 1/2 stars

The doctor-patient relationship is a sure way to attract an audience's prurient interest, as long as proper ethical boundaries are ignored. This brings us to a movie by and for grown-ups with actual attention spans: "A Dangerous Method."

  7. Bleak horror show 'Citadel' makes solo parenting a chore ★★ 1/2

The Irish horror film "Citadel" makes solo parenthood an exceptional challenge, what with the mutant, hooded, devil-eyed, baby-stealing thugs running around some of the bleakest dwellings imaginable. The writer-director Ciaran Foy shot his low-budget...

"Is this really happening?" Nicholas McCarthy asked as he stepped carefully along an icy sidewalk toward the theater.

What's with the sudden B-movie fascination in South Florida?

  13. Living in dangerous times

The prospect of interviewing Don DeLillo produces a certain anxiety. DeLillo, one of the most heralded American novelists of the past 40 years, has a reputation for being inaccessible, emotionally and otherwise. While by no means a recluse like J.D. Salinger, DeLillo, 75, gives interviews rarely, and on those occasions divulges little about his personal life. And like his famously intense, highly polished, vaguely chilly books — reviewers often describe his characters as cold — there's something about him that discourages intimacy. He is, first and last, a mystery, and seems to prefer it that way.

  15. Film review: 'Keyhole' spins 1930s gangster plot with Homer's 'Odyssey'

For a variety of cultural, financial and governmental reasons, Canadian filmmakers produce films that tend to be conventional — even bland. There are two great exceptions to this. The obvious one is David Cronenberg: Even those who hate “The Fly,” “Dead Ringers” and the rest would be unlikely to regard him as bland; many of them probably wish he were more so.

  19. 'Cosmopolis' review: Robert Pattinson's most interesting performance by a mile

*** (out of four) None of Robert Pattinson’s roles have fully lined up with his shifty absent-mindedness. In “Twilight,” he tries to make Edward mysterious and tortured, but comes off as vacant. In this year’s “Bel Ami,&...

  23. Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien to return to the air Jan. 2

On a day when NBC's Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien dealt a blow to striking film and television writers by announcing that they would cross the picket line to go back on the air -- and ABC's Jimmy Kimmel prepared to do the same -- the Writers Guild of America flexed its own muscles by denying waivers to the producers of the Golden Globes and the Oscars.
