1. 'Chasing Mavericks'

In the same manner as "Soul Surfer" not that long ago, this drama tells the true, earnest story of a young person pitted against nature ... the wet brand of it, more specifically. Jonny Weston plays Jay Moriarity, a surfer determined to conquer one of...

3. 'Gangster Squad' review: Soft-boiled

*1/2 (out of four)
*1/2 (out of four) This true story of morally questionable, mid-20th century L.A. cops and their efforts to rid the city of organized crime and corruption contains so much intrigue, it’s a wonder no one’s done it before. Oops, they have....

5. 'Chasing Mavericks' a true surfing story told with charm and heart ★★ 1/2

Watch any surfing documentary, from "Whipped!" to "Riding Giants," and you'll hear the dudes speak — in hushed tones — about the treacherous and epic waves that show up off the coast of northern California when the conditions are just right. The Mavericks break is legendary, and for years, was considered some sort of myth by those who surfed and had never seen it.

7. Haakenson: 'Chasing Mavericks' a surf movie like no other

Hate to break this to you "Blue Crush" fans, but the best surfing movie ever made is about to hit theaters. "Chasing Mavericks" will be released Friday, and it's bound to be a surf movie like no other. At least, that's what San Clemente native and big...

9. 'Chasing Mavericks' review: A Gerard Butler hot streak?

*** (out of four)
*** (out of four) Seriously, Justin Bieber. Are you trying to be as obnoxious as possible, wearing sunglasses during your dinner at Ron of Japan? I mention that because instead of attending Bieber's Chicago concert Tuesday, I saw a movie featuring a...

The Big Picture

17. 'Too Big to Fail' offers balanced look at 2008 economic crisis

Zap2It
If the economy hadn't hung in the balance, the economic meltdown of 2008 would make for a great tragic play. Still, the epic story of hubris and greed makes for a gripping, if overly taut HBO film, "Too Big to Fail," airing Monday, May 23. Based on...

19. Television Review: 'Too Big to Fail'

"Too Big to Fail," which premieres Monday on HBO, is the latest of that network's high-toned original films ("Recount," "The Late Shift," "From the Earth to the Moon," the upcoming "Game Change") in which a large cast of medium-big-to-big-named actors assume the skin of the real people to put you backstage at history. In this case — the story of the 2008 financial meltdown and the attempt to keep us all from ruin — the paint is barely dry on the actual events. Indeed, their ongoing consequences will affect the next election.

23. 'Lucky You'

"Lucky You" is a movie about poker, romance and families and, luckily for us, writer-director Curtis Hanson has a feeling for all three. It's an entertaining movie; Hanson, the director of "L.A. Confidential" and "Wonder Boys," and co-writer Eric Roth get us into their alternative world of poker and luck with a good card player's easy skill. They build it around a character called Huck Cheever (Eric Bana), who initially seems like a figure of pure fantasy and wish fulfillment, a glib, energetic hunk of a guy who plays poker and women with what seems equal skill, but not always good results. And they make him live.
