  5. Tim Leiweke: L.A. muscle man

How significant was Tim Leiweke to the deal between Anschutz Entertainment Group and Los Angeles for a football stadium? This is how significant: There is an escape clause in the agreement that makes the deal's closing contingent on either Leiweke's still being in place as chief executive officer or "a qualified replacement" having been named as his successor. The city gets to make that call, though it promises to "act reasonably" in determining whether the replacement is qualified. That language was placed in the agreement specifically because the city's trust in the deal was based largely on its faith in Leiweke.

  7. The agony and ecstasy of NCAA tournament Selection Sunday

The hours before Selection Sunday are what Lakers announcer Chick Hearn used to call "nervous time."
The hours before Selection Sunday are what Lakers announcer Chick Hearn used to call "nervous time." Defending national champion Kentucky might want to chew on some of Jerry Tarkanian's old towels after probably blowing its bubble bid with an early...

  9. And now, the rest of the story about Jerry Buss

It took several cups of coffee and a couple of hours one recent morning to realize there was still so much more to know about Jerry Buss.

  11. Jerry Buss' everlasting purple and bold effect

Jerry Buss may be gone, but Jerry Buss hasn't gone anywhere.
Jerry Buss may be gone, but Jerry Buss hasn't gone anywhere. Jerry Buss may have died on Feb. 18 at age 80, but Jerry Buss lives. When watching the Lakers makes you howl, when watching the NBA makes you smile, when watching anything in professional...

  13. What's wrong with the media? Just ask Dwight Howard

I have some things on my mind.
I have some things on my mind. — The NFL combine is not one of them. I'd rather watch the wife's reality TV shows all night long and have her tell me about her day during the commercials. — I'm big on "Skyfall," but the fact it's not one...

  17. Jack Disney has lived, breathed and written of SoCal's sports icons

An athlete plays 15 or 20 years, retires and there is great fanfare upon his departure. Maybe tears, maybe gifts given, maybe his number hung in honor.

  19. Vin Scully, pitch perfect for the Dodgers

Oh, that voice! It comes out of the TV, it comes out of the radio, it comes out of the man sitting across from me in the cafe behind the press box at Dodger Stadium. Courtly and indefatigable, Vin Scully has been calling Dodger games since Harry Truman was president and the Dodgers were suiting up in Brooklyn; he's in his 63rd season of sounding every shade of Dodger Blue. As the team passes midseason, it's time for the voice of Dodger baseball, the man who actually does talk a very good game.
