9. Treat Chicago's homicide surge as an epidemic

For once, Chicago has beaten New York in a competition that the Windy City had no desire to win. Chicago ended 2012 with more homicides than New York. No one cheers for that.

  23. Gift Tie-Ins: Give A Gift They Wouldn't Throw Away If They Could

For a few hours every evening, the street in front of my house, normally quiet, has lately transformed into quite the major thoroughfare. It’s a roundabout way to get to Botanica, but obviously some GPS signal prefers this route over something more direct for getting to Illuminations, the lights display at the gardens. Traffic goes all city-sidewalks-busy-sidewalks on us shortly after dark. The city for a few weeks further complicated this temporary and sudden rush hour by blocking (just in time for the holidays!) one lane with a tiny but definitive construction spot, so sometimes traffic even backed up for two or three seconds. Exciting! Really though—it is heartening to see so many people on their way to experience Christmas rather than to hurry through it.
