  1. Carl Hiaasen's 'Hoot' is next One Book One Community choice

For Florida newcomer Roy Eberhardt, it's just one thing after another. If Roy weren't the new kid in school &#8212; again &#8212; then a bully named Dana Matherson wouldn't have smashed Roy's face against the school-bus window. And then he wouldn't have met tough-talking Beatrice and her stepbrother, the mischievous runaway Mullet Fingers. And then he wouldn't have discovered the miniature owls that live underneath a construction site for Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House. And then ... What happens to Roy in Carl Hiaasen's Newbery Award-winning comic novel <em class=&quot;i">Hoot</em> is grist for the <em class="i">Orlando Sentinel's </em>eighth annual One Book, One Community campaign.

Driving me around Las Vegas almost a decade ago, zydeco music blaring from his car stereo, Hal Rothman promised me he'd leave town when its population hit 2 million. He didn't make it. Fast-growing Clark County is closing in on 1.7 million, but Rothman...

  17. Sleuths in their youth

There's much talk -- too much, if you ask some people -- about how to make sure young people will read books in our technological age. Heartening results come by way of the young adult section in bookstores (<i>cf. </i>Rowling, J.K. and Meyer, Stephenie) which is why a number of big-name writers for adults are plying their wares toward the next generation. Some crossovers, such as mystery writer Rick Riordan's Greek mythology-tinged Percy Jackson novels, comic novelist Carl Hiaasen's &quot;Hoot" and Sherman Alexie's "The Absolute True Diary of a Part-time Indian," fare phenomenally well, attracting strong critical notice and big sales in tandem. Others seem more calculated gambits that lose sight of the fact that kids are savvy readers who won't settle for warmed-over leftovers.

    The Associated Press
SANIBEL ISLAND, Fla. -- Florida's southwest coast has bargains to offer the budget-minded traveler, much more than just "early bird" dinners and 2-for-1 happy hours. Shells by the zillions, exotic birds, gentle manatees surfacing like huggable air...

  21. A shipshape way to see Lake Michigan

A small but devoted group of cruise aficionados wouldn't book a trip on a big ship -- even if you offered them free shore excursions or an upgrade to a stateroom on the top deck. Not for them the swimming pools, floor shows and shopping arcades of glitzy mega-ships. They want simpler pleasures: a chance to watch the crew work, see the sights up close and make friends with nice regular folk -- the way I did last July on a six-night Lake Michigan cruise aboard the American Canadian Caribbean Line's Grande Mariner.
